Sleeping on the Floor

DD has decided to stop sleeping in her bed and sleep on the floor instead.  I think she's crazy.  Her room has hardwood floors and she just has a little sleeping mat that's lightly padded.  I can't imagine its comfortable.  But for the last week, every night, except one, she's slept on the floor.  I think it's easier for her to play with her dolls after we leave her room which partly drives it, the other driver is that that they sleep on sleeping mats on the floor at preschool so now she thinks its cool.  I remember loving to sleep on the floor in my parents room when I was little.  Now my creeky body can't imagine choosing it.  Does anyone else's children do this?  Do you care?   So far I haven't encouraged or discouraged it.  I do tell her every time I walk by her door to put her head on her pillow, but that was necessary in her bed as well.

Re: Sleeping on the Floor

  • DS will occasionally lay down but just for a few seconds. Would it help it you put her dolls/stuffed animals in bed with her? Can you get her a sleeping bag or put down something warm and comfy on the floor?

  • My DD went through a sleeping on the floor phase for about three months. I gave up the fight...I figured if she fell asleep fast without an issue on the floor vs. screaming and yelling for two hours and fighting to put her in bed, I chose the floor.

I think if she was really uncomfortable in the middle of the night, she would hop into bed. I cared, for a while, but it became an issue with her losing sleep because of the constant battle.

I have a big, fluffy blanket I put down on the floor for her to lay on top of and make sure to just cover her up well because it feels so cold to me, you know.

  • when DS has a sleepover, they sleep on the floor. they think it's the coolest thing ever in the whole entire world. they said that.

me? never in a million years would i choose (at my ripe old age) to sleep on the floor. heck, i spent $3000 on a mattress so i could sleep on the floor? no way! :)

i'm not sure that i would encourage him to do this on a nightly basis.

do you allow her to bring toys to bed? DS is allowed 1, sometimes 2 toys in the bed. more than that and he will never go to sleep.

  • DD starts most sleeping on the floor. We move her to the bed once she is asleep, but often we find her back on the floor. I have decided that she is sleeping and if she was not comfortable, she would not be doing it. She creates a nest. Pic below.

  • Oh my goodness, that is so cute.

I used to love sleeping on the floor as a kid. Now, I can't even imagine it.

That is too adorable for words and DD does the same.  She is allowed toys in her bed btw, I've never been strict about it.  She just seems to prefer the floor lately.  An extra blanket down is a good idea.  Especially if she keeps it up as it gets colder.

  • She creates her little 'bed' on the floor with blankets. I laugh when she surrounds herself with 20 books, all her dolls and blankets.

ditto to all that!  Now being in the sleeping bag on the floor is painful the next day!
