Switching from Formula to Milk

As hard as it is for me to believe my little man will be a year old next month, I have a few questions for you ladies about switching from formula to milk.

Did you switch to milk "cold turkey"?

Did you gradually switch?

If you gradually switched how did you do it??  Do you make a bottle of formula then just add milk or do you add the milk to your water then add the amount of formula scoops for that total amount of liquid?  (1/2 formula 1/2 milk for an 8oz bottle example: did you make 4oz of formula (4oz water w/2 scoops) then add 4 oz of milk or used 4 oz water, 4 oz milk and 4 scoops of formula).

 TIA!!!

Re: Switching from Formula to Milk

  • Actually I did the switch with formula and off the bottle at the same time. Cow's milk never came in a bottle, only in a sippy and cold.  DD LOVED milk so quickly gave up the bottle in favor of sippies of milk.  DS did not love it (and still is not a huge milk fan) and took a bit longer, with me finally subbing his nighttime bottle of formula with one of water (and then he was done with bottles).  I never mixed the two and it was fine.

  • I asked the pedi about this at DS' 9 month appt. and he said that some kids are fine with going cold turkey, and some kids need the formula to be phased out.  I plan on trying the switch cold turkey first.  I use the RTF formula, so the sooner I'm done paying $$$ for formula, the better!   Hopefully, DS will be on the same page.  Like pp, I also plan on saying goodbye to the bottle, so I'm really hoping DS takes to milk in a sippy right away.  We shall see!

  • We were different since I BF'd, but I started offering him a few ounces of milk at 9 months(per pedi's rec) and increased the amount around his birthday.
  • My son was on formula so I gradually mixed formula with whole milk during the course on 3 weeks. First week I did 75% formula / 25% milk, the next I did 50 / 50 and the next 25% formula and 75% milk. By the 4th week he was on 100% milk and he didn't have any issues at all and drank everything no problem. I did that a month before he turned 1. I used to pre-mix formula in a pitcher so I just poured in the formula in the bottle and then the milk. Good luck, I was happy to ditch the formula... milk is so much easier!

I tried to ease DD into milk, but she did not care for the 2 mixed together.   So I started reducing the amount of  formula in one feeding, then giving her just milk, a few ounces at a time. Surprisingly, the milk gave her gas at first, but now it fine.  She does not like a sippy cup, so we're working that.  Pedi said to eliminate bottles by 18 mos.   Good Luck!

  • We went cold turkey.  He was being breastfed with occassional formula bottles as my milk was starting to deplete due to only pumping (he lost interest in nursing around 8 mo).  We ditched the bottles at the same time.  He drank very little milk in the beginning, but kept offering it at every meal.  It probably took several months before he was drinking a decent amount but now he's all over his milk.  Sometimes he'll have 3-4 glasses/meal.  Just an aside, too, my son did better with the sippy cup straws.  He never really like drinking from the valved cups...so we bought the straw ones that you can push the drink up.  He caught on really quickly and was happy with those until he moved onto a real cup.  Now that's all he wants!
