Winter coats????

It's getting cold and was thinking what kind of winter wear to get my 8 month old for the brutal winters here in MN. A one-piece snowsuite or two-piece? Or those thick one-piece fleeceouterwear? Any advice........

Re: Winter coats????

  • It's not that cold where I live, so I'm not planning on getting snowpants this year.  We only get snow a few times a year and I doubt he'll be out long enough to need more then just an extra layer.  I'll probably get a pair of lined pants, double up or pull on a pair of babylegs under his pants.  So can't help ya there.

I did get a coat.  The one I got has a fleece inner jacket that I can zip in and out, then a waterproof shell.

I do know that you have to be careful about not having too much bulk under the carseat harness.  That isn't a problem here, but keep that in mind when you're deciding what to buy.

This.  If it's going under the car seat straps, stick with fleece.  Then put blankets over the straps and tuck around baby.  You could also put her jacket on backwards after you have her buckled in so she can't as easily get them off.   We just layer, lay blankets over her and make sure the car is preheated.  For walks we have a big one piece suit she wears, and I wear her so my body heat keeps her warm.

  • we're going with a two piece.  All I can think about is bundling Mj up and then smelling a stinky pamper.

  • We live in Michigan and I decided to go with a fleece one-piece from Old Navy. It didn't seem to heavy for the carseat but when I actually put it on him and buckled him into the carseat, there was such a big difference. We're still using the infant carseat so we have the cover that goes over, but I'm not exactly sure what we'll do when he grows out of it.

  • We live near DC.  I got a fleece Columbia hooded jacket for the car seat, and I'll add a blanket or two when it's really cold.  But I also got a once piece down bunting from Columbia as well for stroller walks and for some snow photo-ops in the winter.  It's super cute:  https://www.cabelas.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=1263761&cImage=s7_972407_835_01.

  • I live in MI, so it gets pretty cold and snowy here too.  I got DD a hooded (removeable hood) puffy coat from Gap Outlet.  (I got my DS the 3-in-1 from Children's Place last year when he was 16-21 months during the winter, but I just think it's too stiff and bulky for an infant.)  I also love the Old Navy fleece hats (that have the flaps with velcro that secure around their chin), so I got her one of those.  I will be getting snow pants and boots separate because she won't always need snow pants (e.g., if we're just running to the store, the car and store will be warm).  Sometimes we'll lay a blanket over the kid's legs if it's really cold out and the car won't heat up in time by the time we get to our destination (e.g., daycare drop-off).
