High-Risk Pregnancy

Need GD Help/Advice

Hello! This morning (at 31 weeks gestation) I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes after my 3hr GTT was 7 points high. Can anyone shed some light on the best glucose meter to buy? Looking at them online was overwhelming! Will I need a basic or fancy one? Thanks for any help or tips any one provides!!!

Re: Need GD Help/Advice

  • I was given one when I met with the nurse educator at the hospital.  I'd wait and see if that's the case before buying one.

  • Ditto previous post.  Was given the type that my insurance covered by my Nutritionist and she wrote the script for the test strips (not cheap).  I really like mine though if you have a choice.  It is the Freestyle Lite and uses very little blood.

  • I was also given one by my dietician.  My insurance covered it, and the test strips/needles.

  • As with the PP i was given one the first time i met with my dietician and it was covered by my insurance.

  • agreed, i was also given one at my first appointment, but i have since looked to see how much mine is at the drug store, and it ranges between $12 & $25. so if you're really desperate to get one now, it's really not expensive. The test strips are though, something like $1 a strip (without insurance). so keep that in mind.

  • I was also given one, however, my insurance did not cover the test strips and lancets.  It cost me half as much to buy a whole new meter, strips, and lancets at Walmart.  Altogether I paid just over $50, the test strips for my free monitor were going to cost over $100 for the same amount of strips.

It may make a difference that I never meet my prescription deductible, if I had they may have been cheaper.

  • I was given one by my Endo, however I was diabetic before pregnancy and I can straight up tell you it doesn't really matter. Most doctors offices like the fancy ones because they can plug them into the computer and upload the numbers.

However...if it doesn't matter, I'd go to wal-mart and get the cheap glucometer for $10 and you can get 50 test strips for like $20 or something like that.

My mom's also diabetic and she's a doctor and that's what she uses is the wal-mart kind because they all do the same thing...test blood glucose. And that's what I used before I found out I was pregnant.

  • I got a Freestyle Lite meter and I highly recommend it.  There's a club you can join (for free - they don't ask for any financial info) through the company that will pay for most of your strip costs.  Even with insurance my strips were running $80 for 100 (I was having to test 4 x per day).  When the card from the company it cut my copay to $30.  Just look up the Freestyle Lite  on google and you'll get a link to it.

  • Thanks everyone! My nurse instructed me to have everything purchased prior to meeting with the nutritionist. Unfortunately my lovely insurance does not cover the meter or testing supplies. Thanks Again!
