I'm sure you all must get the "does my kid have a dairy allergy" questions all the time, but I wanted to get your thoughts on my 2 month old (EBF). I plan to bring this all up with my pedi on Wednesday.
For the past few weeks, LO has alternated between normal yellow poops and greenish ones that are significantly slimier (I'm not sure how to tell if this is mucus or not, but they look slimy and have some stringy slimy bits). His poops have always been watery and explosive. He also has horrible baby acne (it's all over his face, neck and scalp) and just yesterday he developed a red ring around his anus. It doesn't look super irritated, but he hasn't had any problems with diaper rash up until now and it's definitely noticeable. His weight gain is good and he isn't overly fussy except for what I would consider normal newborn fussiness in the evening. He sleeps great at night but has problems with frequent awakenings during naps. He's always been pretty gassy and gets the hiccups at least a few times per day.
I'm thinking of eliminating the major sources of dairy in my diet to see if it makes any difference. I guess it can't hurt to see. How long would you recommend? I don't drink a lot of milk, but I do eat a lot of cheese and yogurt.
Re: 2 month old dairy allergy/sensitivity?
When I stopped eating dairy, I saw a huge difference in a few days and total change in my baby 4 weeks. He was very fussy hard to put to sleep and often woke in the night. Once I took out ALL dairy, and his other allergies, he was a perfect baby.
Be sure you talk to your pedi about the poops, even take a picture on your phone if you can. Once I even took a poop diaper to my dr to have it checked for blood.
BF babies tend to have much softer stools than FF babies. FF babies tend to be constipated much more.. and BF babies tend to have explosive (the ones that make the loud noise) poops. But they shouldn't be slimy. (i think)
Adding slimy poop, baby acne (which could easily be eczema), and ring/diaper rash.. it does sound like he's reacting to something.
Is he scratching the acne? or his eyes?
I would eliminate milk for 2 weeks to see if his skin looks clearer.. if not, eliminate milk and soy for 2 additional weeks. After that you can go as far as doing the top 8 elimination diet.
I did the top 8 and my son still had some issues and when he was finally tested we found out he was also allergic to sesame which i did not eliminate (and i looove sesame).. so sometimes it may be something completely different, but the most common is milk/soy and that's what people usually start with.
He doesn't seem to be scratching the acne but he does rub his eyes a lot (and they tend to water often).
DS is/was MSPI, and he never had acne. . .I would definitely try no dairy(all dairy, hidden as well) for two weeks, and then soy after that if there isn't any improvement.
Good luck!
