second hand smoke

good morning ladies!

i have a question about second hand smoke.

there is a non-smoking law at my office, but some people smoke outside by the entrance.

i walk by there every morning and sometimes if there are people smoking, i have to inhale the second hand smoke.

i try to hold my breath but still i have to breath so i inhale a little bit.

my question is, how much is too much second hand smoke?  i am aware that any type of smoke (first, second or third hand) is bad for your baby.

anybody share the same concern?

thank you for your help.

Re: second hand smoke

  • To me, any amount is too much! I'd be wearing a medical mask to work if I had to go by those people...

I would google it for more info about it. I'm sure the american lung association would have more info.

  • I agree that second hand smoke is not a good thing, and that they could find a better place to smoke than by the entrance. I completely 100% agree with you that it's very, very annoying.

But seriously. You're being exposed to maybe 1 second of diluted (breezy, outside) second hand smoke. You're fine. If you're going to panic about that you should worry more about the million toxins and air pollutants you're breathing in 24/7 just by living in the city (or anywhere on planet Earth, for that matter)

  • Second hand smoke is just a dangerous as picking up a cigarette and smoking it yourself. Its a shame that your superiors let this go on unless they are out there too. They should have a designated area for smokers. And seeing that you're pregnant the smokers should at least be courteous enough to move when you're walking in or out of the building.I use to be a smoker myself but if I saw a pregnant woman I either put out my cigarette or I moved far enough away for her not to inhale it.I guess the people you work with really don't give a sh!t.It's a shame.

  • I'm sure that little will hurt you...but here's what I do:

Wave your arm in front of your face really obnoxiously and cover your mouth with your other hand. That should give them the hint.

Whenever I walk with my kids in front of smokers who do this I MAKE them all do the same thing.

  • I tried to delete my post but I keep hitting delete and the bump won't budge, so I guess it's there to stay.

I really want to apologize for being so b!tchy. I was in pain all night and woke up in a supremely awful mood, and that's not your fault. I shouldn't have taken it out on/vented at you OP.

Here's my serious answer: I don't think that little amount will hurt you, but if I had to walk through that every day I'd be really cheesed off too. I understand your frustration.

  • If I can smell it then it's definitely not a good thing.  I try to hold my breath as long as I can when I'm passing by smokers.  In my county in Ca. we have a law where people can't smoke within about 20 feet of an entrance just for this reason.
  • I highly doubt that small amount is going to be harmful,

if your that concerned take a big breath of clean air and run threw them..

  • In Ohio there is a law that people cannot smoke within 20 feet of an entrance into a building. Not sure about where you live. With that being said, I doubt the amount you breathe in will harm you, there are tons of toxins in the air from cars, smog and who knows what else thats not good for you to breathe. My suggestion is another entrance prehaps. GL to you.

  • Have you mentioned it to Building Management? Maybe they could move the smokers away from the entrance and to an area that's not so public. I doubt you are the only person, preggo or not, who is bothered by people smoking so close to the door.

  • By law, don't they have to be something like 50 feet away from the entrance. Contact HR and see if it is enforced. Smoking is nasty!

lol...My husband hates this, but I do the exact same thing. He used to be a smoker so he sees it as a rude reaction from me. I just tell him, "it's rude for smokers to force everyone else to inhale their smoke".

  • My Df smokes and tbh I'm sure a few seconds of second hand smoke will do nothing to your baby. It's not like you are standing around with them purposely inhaling the smoke. And I really wouldn't walk past them waving your arms or covering your mouth or something like that. Its really offensive and bitchy and smoking is an addiction that some people feel bad about so do try to be sensitive about things. If you are really worried, talk to your building manager or boss but it should be fine.

  • Where do you live? In most states that have a smoking ban, it includes something about having to be a certain number of feet (usually 20) away from the entrance of a building to smoke. Find out if that's a law in your state and then talk to building management or your boss about it.

If people aren't sensitive to the fact that I have no desire to inhale smoke every time I enter a building, I see no reason whatsoever to "be sensitive" about the fact that they're polluting my breathing space. It's offensive to me when people smoke in a public place and I have to breathe it in. If they "feel bad" about their addiction, they should go do it somewhere that it's not going to bother other people.
