Fever Blisters/Cold Sores

Have you had one during pregnancy?  I have gotten most of my life so when I got this one, I didn't think to much about it.  I wasn't sure what I could take so I started to google for answers.  Bad idea!!!  All kinds of stories about how it could affect the baby and I needed to call the dr right away.

I called the nurse to look for answers cause now I'm nervous on what I should take.

Just curious as to what your experience has been.  If you've never had one, you are a lucky gal!

Re: Fever Blisters/Cold Sores

  • I had never had one in my life until this pregnancy. I have had 3 now. My doc said Abreva was fine to use and I think some people even take prescription meds for them. It is nothing to worry about! Only if you have genital herpes is it a problem!

Thanks, I think I still have some abreva from the last time I had one.

  • I get them, usually from stress, but haven't had one while pregnant (surprisingly).  I got one right after dd#1 was born.  I haven't heard that they were worse during pregnancy.  I wonder why?  If it were me, I would just use Abreva.

  • I've gotten them on and off pretty much my entire life. I take Valtrex when one pops up. Its safe during pregnancy, and it makes it go away in a day or two, as opposed to 5 or more. Its a miracle drug, and now they have a generic, so its an affordable one!
  • Also, re: being worse during pregnancy. Cold sores pop up typically due to a compromised immune system.  So if you're pregnant, you're obviously immune compromised, which would result in more frequent cold sores.

THIS!! I got one not too long ago but was to scared to take anything this time so I just let it run its course. Not bad

  • I've gotten them before but when I feel one coming on, I stop talking or touching it. Lay down and just breathe, and they usually go away. I haven't had one in over 3 years. They try to pop up but don't actually make it out. I had one try to pop up a couple of weeks ago. I just tilted my head back and just didnt move until I felt the heat go away.
  • Your OB can call in Valtrex, ok during pregnancy, to make it go away sooner.  If it's on your mouth, there is no reason it should pass on to baby.
