Remember the episode of Friends where Ross sings I like Big Butts to baby Emma?
Last night dh and I had a discussion on what we sing to the kids prior to bedtime. I sing all of the songs I learned as a child. Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. Itsy Bitsy Spider. I even take special requests nightly. Right now those include the Super Why theme song or Don't Go Breakin My Heart from Gnomeo and Juliet. When they were itty bitty, I sang Rock A Bye Baby.
I asked dh what he sang and he said, "normal songs." He said, "you know, like U2 and stuff." Ughhhh, I hate U2 and if I knew he was singing With or Without You every night, I might have reconsidered him putting the little one to sleep. ![]()
He redeemed himself by telling me he sings Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah every night. There is something incredibly sweet about that one.
What do you sing to your kids?
Re: Lullabies and other songs sung to your children
John has always been a make up a song and sing it kind of guy. He can't sing very well but has always, always done it. He sings me songs about doing the dishes, taking out the trash, etc. I wish I was kidding. I literally live in a musical. Sometimes I make up dances to the songs. I've come to love it.
So, anyway, he sings his John songs. Usually something like: "Eleanor, Eleanor. She's the one that we adore" and "go to sleep, go to sleep, here is your paci, go to sleep"
These days we sings LOTS of the BNL Snacktime songs Ninja is one of our favorites, and pollywog in a bog. And, since John's sister just got a Leaf, we sing "Electric Car" by They Might be Giants. We also like "meet the elements", John is partial to the parts about the pizza place and I like the part about the elephants being made of 4 elements and "ROY G BIV". We add our own verses.

I tend to sing to DS when we're playing, and I know I've run through all the stuff I sang as a kid... twinkle twinkle, ABCs, I've been working on the railroad, itsy bitsy spider, etc.
I've also realized that I don't have a very big repertoire. I need to go look up the lyrics to other songs I remember singing, but don't currently know by heart. Like the teddy bear's picnic!
Anytime I try to sing, Riley says "no, mama, no".
Guess I am not a good singer.
I'm quite certain as soon as Ellie can talk, she will shut us up, esp. her father. His songs can be annoying. Or, maybe they will gang up on me and BOTH sing all day long.

lol.
Crash went through that stage too. Unfortunately, dh and I are possibly the worst singers ever. Seems like Crash inherited our lovely voices.
We sing The Duck Song.
He smiles every time we get to the "bumm bumm bumm" part.
When the kids cry I sing, Don't Cry by Guns N Rose or Don't Cry for me Argentina.
I don't really do kids songs, unless I am singing WITH Grey.

We have a long list of songs that we sing in our house. Mostly the ones that all of us know from childhood, but there are others as well.
"Godspeed" and "Lullaby" by the Dixie Chicks although I've made up a new verse to "Godspeed" to replace the blessing verse. We don't really talk about god in our house and so the verse was confusing to E.
"Sweet Baby James" by Jame Taylor. I also sing his version of "Oh Susana".
Lots of songs from "Sound of Music". E loves anything by Maria.:) Pretty much any princess song.
Other oldies, but goodies: "You Are my Sunshine", "My Girl", "Didn't Leave Nobody but the Baby" (Emmylou Harris sings this one on the OBWAT soundtrack), and "Swing Low".
tom's diner by suzanne vega
mrs c. that would be DOWNRIGHT creepy if he sang W/ or W/out You to the kids at night. i'm the biggest U2 fan out there and love that song but the lyrics creep me out.
Ha, I thought I was the only person alive who hated U2.
I sing some lullabies but I don't know the correct words so I make them up. Also, some of that sh!t is weird. A baby cradle falling? Jesus. I make them nice. I also sing whatever song I can throw the name Sabrina or Travis into. Which isn't easy.
LOL. Love it! And I know all the words.
That is so sweet!
There are a lot on here that are reallly sweet.
When my Goddaughter was a newborn/infant, her dad (my Huz's BFF) would bring her over at night while his wife was at work (they all worked midnights). I would rock her to sleep while singing "Three Little Birds" by Bob Marley, or "I'm So Tired" and "Good NIght" by The Beatles.
I'm tone deaf, so I'm sure it wasn't the most beautiful thing ever, but it worked! lol
Wow, I'm totally saving this post. I'm getting so sick of This Land is Your Land and Twinkle Twinkle/ABC's, which are my go-to songs when I'm tired and don't feel like thinking up the lyrics to anything else. My favorites from the above suggestions are Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley and Sweet Baby James by James Taylor. LOVE.
Sometimes I sing Broadway showtunes, especially from South Pacific or Miss Saigon. She loves "Wash that man right outta my hair" and "I'm in love with a wonderful guy."

LOL- My kids have gone thru this too. Mrs.C- I love that your husband sings "normal" songs. Funny- I have never even thought of doing that.
I do the typical like you, but also make up my own versions- like to the Baa Baa Black sheep tune- Ribbit Ribbit Green Frog have you any flies? Yes sir, yes sir, I caught them from the skies. One for breakfast, one for lunch, one for dinner, mmmmmm they're good to munch, etc. And- actually many to that same simple tune. Some are extremely embarrassing to even admit, others are really sweet like, "Alana Lastname, I love you, Don't you know that's really true, etc...."
i'm known to sing 'bushel and a peck' from guys & dolls to dd .. glad i'm not the only one who goes for the old show tunes.
I forgot Sweet Baby James and Three Little Birds. I have actually sung both of those. One because I love James Taylor and Bob Marley because Crash used to love three little birds when they played it on Nick Jr.
I forgot to mention my very favorite song. When I was a little girl, my Dad and I would watch Sha Na Na before my bedtime. At the end they sing "Goodnight Sweetheart." My dad would then put me to bed and sing it with me word for word. One of my fondest daddy/daughter memories.
And yes, I'm Old.
We sing all the usual Twinkle Twinkle kind of stuff, but have a few other standards like "Hey Little Man" by Eddie from Ohio, which is a song that Ryan's nanny used to sing to him and the "Appalachian Lullaby", and the Beatle's "Blackbird". Aaron really likes "You Are My Sunshine" which when I'm singing it always turns into "This Land Is Your Land"
I also sing a bunch of latin stuff that I learned in choir, like the "Magnificat" while they're in the bath. It's always good for riling them up, so it's not so much for bedtime lullabies.

My oldest son will probably sing this to his big sister. He LOVES that song. I don't know what I'll sing to my baby girl. For Colin, it was "Mercedes Benz" by Janis Joplin. For Logan, it was "Hush Little Baby". They picked their songs, not me. I just started singing everything I knew and went with what they settled best with. Hopefully, she picks a song that I don't mind.

I posted on FB the other night...my H makes up songs all the time, and for the baby it has become just words to any song he can play on the guitar. The other night I walked in to hear him strumming along and singing (to the tune of Another Brick in the Wall by Pink Floyd), "All in all, you're just an...awesome baby that's bald."
My go-to's lately have been Neil Young's Unknown Legend, and Dixie Chicks Lullaby.
I have yet to break out any actual kids songs while singing to him.
Is this a really old post resurrected?
