Which breast pump is the best? I'm happy to spend the money on a good one, but I have no clue which is the best. What do I need to know? Which details make one better than another.
From all my research when I was pregnant I would say Medela. But since they are pricey I got this one by Ameda (except it was purple) and it was good! No problems except I had to call them and get the base exchanged because it was acting up. Customer service was good though. If I didn't have to think about money when purchasing one, I would have gotten this Medela one. HTH!

Medela, hands down. I started with an Ameda Purely Yours and it lost all suction after 2 weeks. Luckily Diapers.com has awesome customer service and I got a full credit for it even though it was used and I had bought it months before. I loved my PISA.
I have friends that have been happy with their Medela pumps and others equally happy with Ameda. I went with the Ameda pump. I liked that it was priced competitively, an awesome pump and a closed system. I also like that it came with different sized flanges, could be battery or AC powered and also has the hand pump with it. I get great results when pumping but I that has just as much to do (or more) with your production than the pump.

Same here. I have had my Ameda for 5 years and it still works great. The closed system (milk is completely untainted) was key for me when I bought it. Can't buy it at the superstores like BRU, so you will always see less people with it, I wouldn't have known about it if it wasn't for the internet.
Fortunate to be a SAHM to my 3 musketeers (5/2006, 5/2010 & 12/2011).
Soy & dairy free for the 3rd and final time.
Check out the Hygeia Enjoye. Unlike the Medelas, it's a closed system (like a hospital rental) and I found it to be much more comfortable than the two Medelas I used. It's also FDA certified for multiple users (Medela is single-user only).
Hygeia was started by a former Medela VP. The EnJoye uses the same technology as the Medela Lactina. I have the one with the internal battery and have never had the battery run out even after 4 days of nearly EPing.
The only things I don't like:
-parts have to be purchases online or at specialty retailers instead of places like Target or BRU
-it fits wide-mouth bottles and I have all standard bottles. If I had known about this pump and all before I had bought bottles, it wouldn't seem like a bummer.

I haven't bought a pump yet and probably won't until the baby comes, but I'm strongly considering this one too. Baby Bargains rates it as high as the Madela and the price can't be beat. However, Burlington Coat Factory has Madela pumps at a really good price, so if I get a good coupon that would bring the price down a little more, I may splurge on it.

All of this - I've been using my pump for 6 weeks about 6 times a day - it's great!!

I really like my Medela PISA. The Ameda Purely Yours is a great option too but parts and accessories aren't as widely available which could be an issue depending on what stores you have nearby.

I had the Ameda Purely Yours. I bought it off Ebay for $75 and free shipping! It did stop working after 5 days of use, but I called Ameda (Evenflo) customer service and they were fantastic. They sent me a brand new motor and I haven't had a problem since!

I LOVE my EnJoye! I pumped with it for a year 3+ times a day while at work, and plan to use it this time again. I just ordered some extra parts (tubes, valves, filter) at the beginning and that way I always had them available if I needed them. I think I changed my duckbill valves twice in a year to improve suction. My pump came with wide-mouth to standard bottle adapters that allowed me to pump into the Medela bottles.
It's a closed system, no chance of milk getting into the pump. The suction and the speed are individually controlled. I have the one with the rechargeable battery which allows me to be able to pump anywhere that I need to (in the car at client locations).
For those recommending the Hygeia Enjoye, did you buy it new or used? Since it is approved for multiple users and the individual accessories are only $35ish on Amazon, I would be interested in buying a "recycled" one as the website calls it. Any tips on where to tip one up? CL doesn't seem to have many listings. There's a hospital lactation center near me - would they sell it?

I borrowed my cousin's and bought the $35 personal accessory set until I had really established that pumping was going well. Then I bought my own new.
They aren't nearly as mainstream as other brands which is probably why you aren't seeing them on CL. Lactation centers generally specialize in one or two brands (my hospital sells Ameda pumps and Bravado bras). It couldn't hurt to give them a call and see if they carry the Hygeia stuff or if they can help point you in the right direction.
I LOVE my Ameda Purely Yours. I tried the Medela in the hospital but ultimately, I preferred my Ameda. I had the Avent Isis hand pump w/ DS and it was fine for occasional use but definitely not something I would want to use regularly.

Loved my Hygeia- seriously the best pump AND it's not crazy expensive.

I'm not buying one. I know too many people that had an awful time with their breast pumps, particularly Medela. Two of my friends spent all that money on buying one that they could not return and then ended up renting a hospital grade thru their lactation consultant that worked much better. I'm just doing that...

I bought mine new from Milkalicious (milkalicious.com) which is a local BF boutique. The owner is an awesome LC and was super helpful. I bought spare parts in-store that aren't listed online.
FYI - Hygeia also will accept returns of USED pumps for 21 days after purchase.
The Hygeia website shows locations for sales - I would contact them and see if they sell "recycled" or refurbished models.
ETA: mine also came with the adapter for standard bottles.

The BRU near me had the 'ultra' version in store, but it's also on Amazon and some other sites. The ultra is $300 because it comes with extras, but you could get a different version cheaper at some place other than BRU. I haven't used it, but Baby Bargains rated it highly and it's a closed system, so I'm registering for it.
I have this one and no complaints! I really wanted a closed system. I got a great deal on it. BRU had it on sale plus there was a BRU coupon for 15% off pumps and then a $50 rebate.
