Trouble TTC

Guiliana Rancic has breast cancer

The poor couple can't seem to catch a break, but thank goodness her doctor pushed her to have the mammogram.

I'm wondering the same thing - this the first time I've ever heard it mentioned and this topic of 'what is needed before IVF' comes up alot around here.   My RE definitely doesn't require it or even mention it - maybe b/c I'm 31.

I assumed it was for everyone, but maybe it's because I was over-35?   I think she's the same age I am, so maybe that's why they didn't make her do it when she was 34 the last time around.

My clinic makes you sign a bunch of papers saying you know it's your responsibility to keep up-to-date with pap smears and mammograms with your regular ob/gyn at the start of every IVF cycle, and they're really anal about wanting to know if you've gone recently.  My nurse was only worried about pap for me, though.  I think it is definitely an age thing.

  • OMG, I am tearing up reading this.  I am BRCA1+ (breast cancer gene and high risk). I get regular mamms and MRIs as part of my high risk screening. I had one in July just before my first IVF.  This really brings this close to home as I REALLY believe that the IVF drugs increase my risk for cancer.  I'm so curious to see if she ends up being BRCA+ since she has early on-set BC.  My heart breaks for her. Thankfully, her doctor required the mammogram and they caught the cancer very early..I love this couple and I thought it was so sweet when she said that her future child probably saved her life..

I had never heard of getting a mammagram before IVF, is it always required or is there any age where they start requiring it?

The mammogram requirement for IVF must depend on the RE. I am 37, and mine the said I would not need one until 40-- which coincides with my normal preventative health screening guidelines. I only had to have a recent pap smear on record.

Most insurance won't cover routine mammograms until 40, some of them at 35. It's scary to think that just last year they were trying to move the age up to 45! Thankfully the American Cancer Society didn't let that happen.

  • I feel so bad for her. She is the epitome of class with how she has handled everything. I'm heading into the shower to do my breast self exam right now.

  • OK, that was seriously heartbreaking to watch!  My grandmother died from breast cancer (she was pretty sure hse had it but did nothing until a month before she died because she was 85, her husband had passed the year before, and she was actually wanting to die and be with him again - so sad).

I had mamograms back in 2004 before my breast reduction surgery but nothing since.  If the next two treatment cycles don't work and we move ahead to IVF I will totally be getting one done!

  • Oh no. That is so sad. That poor couple.  I haven't heard of a mammogram prior to IVF either.

I just posted on PAIF about this.  I am shocked that her first RE never made her get a mammogram before her first two rounds of IVF.  That was a pre-requisite for me before my RE would even consider it.   So glad to hear they caught it early!

I had never heard of getting a mammagram before IVF, is it always required or is there any age where they start requiring it?

I assumed it was for everyone, but maybe it's because I was over-35?   I think she's the same age I am, so maybe that's why they didn't make her do it when she was 34 the last time around.

I am over 35 and getting a mamogram was never suggested to me and I have done IVF twice now.  So I don't think this is standard practice, I think it must depend on your dr.

  • Oh my gosh, that is so so sad. I've been watching her struggle with IF and give her so much credit for being courageous enough to share her story with the world. It can't be easy as a public figure to put all of that out there for everyone to see, but she's given a voice to what all of us are going through.

Thank goodness they caught the breast cancer early and I love her for being such a fighter.

  • In theory, it is a very sound idea to have a mammogram before going through treatments. If your breast cancer is hormone-receptor positive (if you've ever heard of "ER+" or "PR+", they stand for estrogen receptor + and progesterone receptor +), it is a VERY bad idea to have any exposure to extra estrogen and progesterone.

All of the hormones that you take can "feed" a hormone-receptor + tumor and help it to grow.
