Babies: 6 - 9 Months

XP: Those who had colicky babies

Our son has screamed from 3 weeks to 6 weeks every night almost. We introduced prune juice after pedi saw that he was backed up at one of my many visits and he cried two out of the past eight nights, we began the juice eight nights ago. Last night was bad though, and it seemed like it started when he couldnt wait for bottle to be warmed. He got so upset and it just escalated to him screaming for two hours, and you could tell he wouldnt let himself calm down. Sometmes I think he's in pain from gas or constipation, but last night seemed what they call colicky. I know it's not over and it's so hard. :( Anyway, please tell me your experiences with this.

What is it like? How do you deal with it?

When did it go away? Did it taper off or just disapear? Many TIA!

Re: XP: Those who had colicky babies

  • Ours only lasted 22 nights (but who's counting?) and started around 3w.  I feel like it pretty much just went away, but I think we had a couple rough nights before it was completely gone.  Ours was nightly from 7-10 p.m. and she would basically cry/scream the whole time with tiny breaks and then a big puke at the end.  She wasn't like my DS who would comfort nurse, so I felt helpless.  What I did was put her in my Ergo and try to get her to pass out around 6:30ish in anticipation for 7 (she was like clockwork).  Sometimes it would cut the screaming down by an hour or so since she was zonked out on my chest, but I really couldn't sit down either.  DH would walk with her and sometimes we would have our kitchen sink running and that would give us 10 min. of peace.  It was rough and felt like it would never end, but alas it did.  Now she's a super happy baby and goes to bed between 7:00-8:00 most nights.

Are you BFing?  I just ask b/c if you are the baby probably isn't truly "backed up" and that's kind of old-school thinking on your doc's part.  Unless the baby is pooping pellets of course.  I know I was desperate to look for any solution or cause, but we just had to ride it out.  I also knew that it wasn't true reflux, even though that seems to be something that docs want to medicate for a lot.

Sorry you are going through this and I hope you get past this hump soon!

  • I don't have a colicky baby, but my BFF does.  He's about 2.5 months old now and he got much better about two weeks ago when she started giving him probiotic drops in his bottle.  Her pedi recommended it and at that point she was out of ideas and gave it a try.

  • I thought my DS was colicky...it cleared up when I stopped nursing and switched to Alimentum formula, so I attributed it to a milk protein intolerance...just last week we saw an allergist because although his mood is fine now, he stopped gaining weight. He has a severe allergy to milk.

Probably that is not what is happening with your LO because you would see other signs - mucousy stools, screaming/fussy ALL day, etc...

Just hang in there. A lot of us have been there and it WILL get better. I know its super hard in the thick of it so try to get help when you can so you can have a break. Even if its just a half an hour that can make a world of difference.

  • We were told DS was just colicy, after he screamed for hours at a time for 2.5 months. Turns out he has acid reflux...ugh. Once he started medication the screaming stopped for the most part. He still struggles with reflux, and isn't a very happy baby. But it's gotten better.

  • Colic Calm (available at CVS and online) worked miracles for us. I really think my DD had gas (and reflux) issues and Colic Calm helped with the gas and tummy issues.

Hang in there, it does get better!

  • Things started looking up around 3.5 months.  By 4 to 4.5 months - whole different baby.  He did have reflux and is still on meds so that was probably part of it.  We tried everything.  I cut dairy and soy out of my diet, etc.  We pretty much lived by the S's from Happiest Baby on the Block.  He required CONSTANT soothing.  We listened to a recording of a vacuum cleaner that was so loud no one could carry on a conversation.  People say the baby phase flies by.  I say that was the longest 4 months of my life.  On the bright side: look at my siggy pic.  We now have a ridiculously happy baby boy :)  People comment all of the time on his great disposition and we just laugh.  He was worth it!  Hang in there!

  • We had a super colicky baby from 3 weeks until 10 weeks.  I basically held, rocked, swaddled, and nursed 24/7.  He would cry non-stop from about 6pm-midnight.  I thought it would never end and i felt terrible for not enjoying my baby.  I promise that it does get better.  What helped for us was doing better with daytime napping and just reminding myself that it wouldn't last forever.  Ace is now a really happy guy and i almost forget how terrible it was. On the up side, i do think it really helped us form a great attachment because i was with him all the time and responded to his needs.

  • I think those first few months are the hardest, especially if you're a new parent! These colicky moments will soon be a memory. I remember something I read saying that once it's over, you will have survived one of the biggest challenges of parenthood. My daughter had colick from ages 3 weeks to 8 weeks I believe. It started at 6 pm and ended around 9 pm. But those were the longest hours!

Then after that ended, I wouldn't really say she was colicky but just kinda fussy. That lasted until about 5 months of age. I work in the infant room at a children's day out program. I notice that a lot of the "fussy" babies seem to grow out of it once they hit about 5 or 6 months. It seems to go away when they can start sitting up on there own and when they're more active and mobile.
