Need help with our boy names list

We found out on Thursday that we're having a little boy, but are having such a hard time finding a name for him. DD is Alexandra, but goes by Sasha. We are Russian (both our families) and would like a name to be a Russian name, or at least be easy for our families (here and extended family in Russia). My favorites are Roman, Max, and Dmitry, but they were all shot down immediately by DH, he won't even consider them, sigh.

So here's our list as of a couple of days ago:

Evan - we both adore this name, but there are two problems with it: our LN is 2-syllables, 4 letters long, so it might look a little choppy. Another one is that for the families they'd probably "convert" it to Vanya, which I happen to really like and think it's sweet, but DH isn't a big fan of (he says he doesn't care if other people call him that, but he'd call him Evan)

Edward - we both love this name, nn's are fine in both Russian and English, but I'm a little worried it doesn't "fit" in with DD's name and doesn't sound too Russian (although there is a Russian equivalent of this name)

Arthur - we both like it, think it's got spunk, but our LN starts with "A"

Denis - ok, this one's tricky. We both really like this name, but my sister's DH's younger brother's name is Denis, so would this be really weird? Also, it doesn't lend for nn's and we like to have options on what to call him

Nicholas - also not too Russian-sounding, but easy to say, but DH is a little iffy on this one because he says it sounds "too Christian" (we're Jewish).

Thoughts? Suggestions? TIA!! Sorry, it got so long!!

Re: Need help with our boy names list

  • I like Evan or Ivan. And I think Vanya is a cute nickname.

As far as suggestions, I like Misha, but I think in the US it is mostly used as a girls' name.

My husband is Russian as well we are trying to decide between Reece or Aven for a boy. Neither is Russian though but if you like Ivan and Evan, I thought I would throw Aven at you! :)

I like Evan and the nn Vanya!  I think it's fine for your husband to call him Evan while others use the nickname.  My name has several nicknames and I answer to all them.

What is the Russian equivalent of Edward?

It's nearly the same: Eduard. Nickname is Edik, which is so close to Eddie. My FIL is Mikhail (Misha), so that's out.

Our top runners right now are Evan and Edward.

  • I like Edward and Arthur from your list.  Does your A last name have the same kind of sound as the "ar" from Arthur?  If not, I think you might be okay.

Actually, it sorta does. It's an "Ah" sound. So I think that it might be a bit too much.

  • I like all of your options. A couple of thoughts:

    1) I don't think it matters that your sister's DH's brother's name is Denis. That's pretty far removed from you. The only person it would really affect is your BIL, and I'm sure he wouldn't care. It's not a big deal.

    2) I don't 'get' the "too Christian" thought for Nicholas. I'm vaguely aware that there's a Saint Nicholas, but I certainly don't have a religious connotation with that name (and I'm a pretty devout Christian). I think of Santa or Czar Nicholas

    3) I'd veto Evan if it sounds clunky with your LN. I think FN/LN flow is really important.

I don't really get this either, but DH has vetoes Noelle (wanted to use it for a mn for DD) for the same reason. I guess it just sounds too Christian to him.

  • I like Evan the best and also the Russian equivalent to Edward. I think it sounds nice with your daughter's name too!

I'm sad he shot down Dmitry. I LOVE that name.

You have some great choices though, friend!

I looove Edward. It's underused and a great name.

I could be wrong, but I think St. Nicholas has a much bigger presence/is a much bigger deal in Eastern European cultures than say, America. Maybe that's why? And to be honest, as a Catholic, I totally think of St. Nicholas with this name (and Santa Claus originated from St. Nick too). It's a great name, though.

  • I know a Russian family with a son named Alexander. They call him Xander.

Haha, just reread that your daughter is Alexandra. Smile

  • Evan nn Vanya is adorable, which makes me sad if the last name doesn't work with it. I also like Edward and Arthur.

Denis is almost identical to Penis.

Do you pronounce it Dee-nis? Or Pen-nis?

OMG, I didn't even think about this!!! I guess it's now off the list, kids can be quite cruel... In Russian it's pronounced De-NEES (almost like Denise, but with an "s" at the end), but here in the States, I guess it's be identical to the pronunciation of Dennis.
