Holy Preschool Picture Prices!

Yikes, we just got DD's K3 picture proof and order form.  The cheapest package is $50 and you can't order a la carte sheets unless you order a package.

Her picture is okay, not one I would buy if it wasn't her school picture. Not buying it isn't an option for me, so I am just whining and complaining.

::off to write the first of many checks for overpriced, mediocre school pictures::

  • Put me in the bad mom's club. I refuse to buy overpriced, underwhelming school pictures. I throw the proof in the box with all his school stuff but I'm not spending money on something I don't like.

  • Do you have the option to buy a CD with the image and the printing rights?  I was able to get DS' picture that way for $18.  It didn't include any prints, but I can do it myself anywhere.  I agree though...It's not a great pic of him.

  • yeah, i'm a bit nervous about this. at daycare, i'd put all three boys in one picture, but the cheapest package for that was STILL $40. ugh. no way will i be able to buy three individual sets unless they have a super cheap package.

i mean, i know i got into photography so i could take good pictures of my kids, but there's something about school pictures...

  • I'm not buying school pictures until DS gets into Pre-Kindergarten (K4) next year.  He'll be making his regular trip to Sears Portrait Studio like he has been.

  • I posted this same thing a few months ago!  It's outrageous how much they charge.  I have two kids so when I did the math, it was about $200 to get all the pictures.  I ended up just getting each kid a class picture and then did the package for the two of them together.

I felt the same way - getting nothing wasn't an option.  Too many family members wanted pictures.   For me, the class picture is the best thing to get.  I still have mine from pre-school and one of the girls ended up being a lifelong friend so it's nice to have a picture of us when we're 3.  It was another reason I could justify getting the pictures.

  • Ouch that is crazy high as the lowest price.  I got a pakcage for around $20 that was basically 2 5x7's and a few other small ones from older DD's PreK and I will get the pricing on my younger DD's preschool pics today since she just got them taken today but I know in the past the basic package was around that same $20 mark.  I always by school pictures once they start PreK - daycare and preschool ones I only bought if I really liked them.

  • Ours were expensive - and you had to PRE order.  So I had no idea if the pictures would even be decent.  I bought a class pic for $10 and that was it (and that was the cheapest pic to choose!).
  • DS' preschool does two picture days a year. Last fall we an envelope with 3 full 8X10s, 3 sheets of smaller sizes, plus the class photo.  If you kept the full envelope, it was over $100.  I returned most of it and still paid $70.  I kept 2 8X10s, two sheets of the 5X7s for grandparents and the class photo.  I too adore my own class photos from preschool and the poses of him alone were priceless (picture a 2 year old holding a football with swagger in what looked like a college campus setting).  Hysterical.

  • At least you get to see the proof before ordering the pics.  Our preschool makes us pay for the package before getting the pics taken.  Right now I have a bunch of pics of DD with a bow right that the front of her hairline.  Apparently when it fell out the teacher didn't raelly try to make it look nice before putting in back in.  Grrr....

  • That seems super high to me. Our cheapest package was $15... granted you didn't get very much, but at least you got something. The a la carte sheets were really high on ours. Crazy, but I would be the same way! :/

  • We don't buy!  At the start of the year I take each child to Sears and get each one the $7.99 portrait package.  We get like 45 pictures for that flat price.  We still commemorated the new school year with a pro-pic but didn't bust the budget.

  • I spent about $100 on DD's preschool pictures last year.  It was one of those things where they sent the whole package home with you and you return what you don't want.  Wel the smallest package was like $50 and for $100 you could get a ton of stuff.  I actually LOVED the pictures so we went for it.

It is out of control expensive.  Her dance and soccer pictures were both over $50 too!  They make you feel like you HAVE to buy them.

  • I think there's more going on here. DS went to a daycare/preschool and they did school pictures that were outrageously priced. We did get to pick first, but DH was suckered into paying $40 for one 5x10 and 1 sheet of 3x5's. However- now DS is in an elementary school and even though he's only 3 and in a special needs class, they do pictures. You did have to preorder before seeing them, but the price was only $7.50 for the cheapest set (which included 7 pictures + a class picture). So think it varies per school.
