September 2011 Moms

moms of 2 (or more)

So I realize I don't post often, especially less now since the 2 are keeping me mad busy.

But I am wondering what you are doing about potty training your toddler. Ours is 2.5 now but has slowly been training himself over the last few months. We didn't plan to do it because of the little one on the way (here now), it just sort of happened. But we are now facing the hurdles of getting him to understand how underwear works, and how to do it outside of the house.

If he is naked in the house he will always tell us he needs to use the potty for pee, about 50/50 for poo he either asks for a diaper or the potty. Never has an accident. But the minute you put him in underwear he pretty much pees within 15 minutes and then comes to tell us he is wet. Up until this week it has all been voluntary, high fives were all we needed to encourage him. And my husband up until this week has been let our toddler chart his own course...he'll let us know when he is ready for undies, just like he started on the potty.

I am just worried we are stifling him, because we've been between the potty and diaper so long. And then since we're tired of changing poo diapers on him my husband suddenly decided to give him a jelly bean every time he makes poop in the potty.

I am not sure where to go next since the whole thing has been so free form thus far.

Thanks for all your input!

Re: moms of 2 (or more)

  • My suggestion is that once you put him in underwear, do not go back to diapers.  Ever.  At all.  (not counting nights and naptime)  Yes, there will be alot of messes and laundry, but that's the fastest and least confusing way.

I also think rewards for using the potty are good.  We used M&M's and DS reacted really well to that.  He was completely PT by 2.5, and we pretty much let him take the lead.  But once he started going, we went cold turkey.  I have friends that kept switching back and forth between underwear, pull ups, and diapers and it took them much longer to PT their kids.

That's our plan, but we haven't started yet. There always seems to be a good reason not to, unfortunately.
