Home test/blood test?

I was wondering how late you all were before getting back a positive result from a home pregnancy test? And if any were very late and had to go for a blood test to find out that you were in deed pregnant? My sister in law is currently 2 weeks late but still getting a negative result at home. I finally convinced her to call the doctor and have a blood test done...she did today. She said she would keep me posted--I'm trying not to get my hopes up, but it would be SO GREAT if the cousins were so close in age!

Re: Home test/blood test?

  • I tested before my missed period (though it would be great news for father's day and it was).... the positive result came on day 20 of a usually 24 day cycle.... my sister said her pregnancy test was negative several times before bloodwork confirmed her pregnancy

  • From what I have been told, the tests are sensitive enough to confirm a pregnancy after a missed period because immediately there is a rise in the HCG hormone, but the blood test is the best way to be certain. Good luck to her!

Yes this was my thought too, until I used one of the "test 5 days before your missed period" tests, and didn't get a positive until I myself was 2 weeks late! Keep your fingers crossed we get a positive blood test back!!!!

  • My OB did not even do a blood test... They use pee tests even if patients come in for the test. I only got a blood test when I started spotting to check levels.
  • If she is two weeks late, chances are she just ovulated later than she normally does.

I was charting my cycles and got a faint positive at 10DPO (which was about 5 days before my missed period) and then a strong positive at 12DPO.

Honestly...I'd encourage her to not waste her doctor's time. Blood tests in the office are really not that much more sensitive than an HPT. Maybe by a few days, but that's about it. If she is getting negatives, it is either too early for her to get a positive and she should keep testing or she isn't pregnant.

The general rule of thumb on the TTC board is to keep testing daily until she gets a positive, her period comes, or her cycle reaches 60 days.

Wow, 60 days?? Hmm...I guess she is usually pretty regular, but has been off BC for about a year now and is in the "not trying but not NOT trying" phase. Who knows....I think with her personality she is most likely going to get the bloodtest done just so she can relax knowing if she is or isn't. 60 days tho? That seems so long to wait to call the doctor! Thanks for the advice Salt!

I was thinking along the same lines as Salt that she most likely ovulated later.  I don't know if I'd test every day since if you don't have the internet cheapies that could get pricey but rather once or twice a week until she gets a pos, her period, or 60 days.

I have had very irregular cycles that occasionally lasted longer than 60 days (though I was ovulating around day 45-50 so there was no need to call the doc) so I know first hand how much a long cycle can suck. :)

Sometimes that just happens randomly with no medical reason behind it, so if it does turn out that it was just a long cycle, she shouldn't be too concerned over it unless it becomes an all-the-time type pattern. (And even then nothing could be wrong. I'm perfectly fine, but I just have obnoxious cycles.)

    Best of luck to her!

Thanks for sharing--I will let her know that it very well could just be late due to an irregular month. Thanks again!
