S/O babyproofing... Christmas Tree?!

Maybe those with other small children can explain this one...

Will it even be possible to have a tree up this year? Miles gets in to EVERYTHING. I can't imagine what he will do to a Christmas tree... I have images of the entire thing crashing down on top of him!

Re: S/O babyproofing... Christmas Tree?!

  • One of my friends puts a baby gate around her tree to keep her LO away.  I think we are going to put our tree in our formal living room, which C doesn't go in.

  • Umm, hmm, hadn't that about that....  I have no idea what we'll do.  Don't know what we'll do there.  I can imagine though it won't be up for quite as long this year!

  • We had it right in.our family room... We just said NO! and moved DS if he went for it. After a few, he mostly stayed away. Same thing we've been doing when he touches other stuff he shouldn't!

  • We bought a super gate thing, the one that can be made into a pen, and it's been handy for blockng off all sorts of things. I think we'll be putting it around the tree.

  • Ours is kind of behind the area he plays in, so we will just watch him when he's around it.

  • i asked DH about this the other day!  he said maybe we should get a small fake tree and put it on the table.  last year we didnt even put up a tree so i was looking forward to putting it up this year.  we'll see.
  • We are just going to put the unbreakable ornaments towards the bottom of the tree and hope for the best.

  • Might I also suggest putting jingle bells on the bottom so you can hear if they touch it!!

  • We will put it in our formal living room which she is not usually in unless we are with her. We have put it in the family room in the past, but this is her play area and I just hunky hunk that is too much temptation.

  • i think we're putting a pen around ours. we have a teeny house and the tree usually goes in our living room which is the main room of the house. i'm less worried about the ornaments and more of her playing in the tree water and gnawing on the stand. LOL.

but our cats also like to eat the tree needles and puke them up later so this is an added bonus of using a pen.

  • Hmmm... ok... I think you've relieved my fears a LITTLE bit. I don't think we'll do the gate because our livingroom is too small. We'll probably try the "NO!" approach, and if all else fails, we'll move the tree to the dining room area, even though I have my heart set on it being right in the front window.

We'll see! I'm sure we'll all have some pretty interesting stories come time.

  • We'll be putting ours in the formal living room which is gated off. We usually have two trees though, so we're going to forgo the one in the family room because all I can imagine is an epic disaster.

This is what we'll be doing too.  Along with Kellina's jingle bell idea.

  • I am hoping the superyard will be good enough to gate it off...unless DS knocks the whole gate over or pushes it straight into the tree as he walks forward. I second thought, maybe putting up a tree isn't such a good idea.Tongue Tied

All of this. We've never had a tree before (DH is Jewish) but we were hoping to do it this year. We might get a small one and put it up on a table..?

Yeah, you just gave my kid a new toy!  Seriously, I foresee LOTS of bell ringing & giggling on this one.  I will still put the bells on though, and watch the comedy/tragedy unfold that is the cats & Penzilla chasing each other around the tree.  And by around, I of course mean under & through.  I will have the video camera at the ready.  Big Smile
  • We're going to put it in a corner and secure it by tying it to the wall.  We always did this in our house growing up, even well past the age we'd mess with the tree, because it kept it from falling if one of our cats tried to climb it.

We'll definitely be keeping the breakable ornaments at the top, and we may put the play yard around it, we'll see.  We'll probably start of by telling him NO and seeing how that goes.

  • We don't have a lot of space, so the tree will go in its usual spot in the family room.  I will probably not put the breakable ornaments on at all this year.

Thanks! My Mom is the genius on this one, though. She always did this even when we were older... So the cats and dogs stayed away!
