Babies: 6 - 9 Months

mum mums

I'm afraid.  I've given them and he puts the whole thing in his mouth and breaks it in half, trying to swallow the whole thing at once.  I haven't tried them again whole.  Is anyone else afraid of choking?  He does okay with whole puffs, and that took me a whole month of freaking out before I'd try that.

Do you give your 6-9 monther mum mums?  How do they do with the whole one?

  • all the time since 6 months. She loves them! Try one...they dissolve in about 2 seconds...he'd have to work hard to choke on them.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut

  • My LO did the same exact thing at first, and I freaked out a little, too.  He got the hang of it pretty quickly - without ever choking.  Just try to relax a little and let your LO figure it out.  I know it's hard, but it's how they learn.

  • Matthew gets mad if I give him a whole Mum-Mum. He smacks it on his high chair tray until it breaks or I take it away and break it for him.

  • Too afraid to bother with them.  A girl I know is a nurse who had to try and save a baby who choked and died on one of those.  I am sure it was a freak accident but her story scared the crap out of me.  I'm sure there's not a whole lot of nutritional value in them so I don't think she'll be missing out by not having them!

  • We just started giving the mum mums this week.  At first it freaked me out, but she's learning what she needs to do.  I tried a bite for myself and they do dissolve really quickly and with the amount of saliva my kid makes, it helped ease my mind.

Now the puffs are a whole new thing...those still freak me out.

Oh wow, thanks for sharing this though. I'm sure it was a freak accident as well... but still. I've thought about mum mums, but I'm pretty sure I seen a label that stated it's for toddlers. I steer away from anything that is above a crawler.

I also believe that the puffs say they're for toddlers as well? Not sure. But anyway, I don't see the rush and I will just wait on puffs and mum mums.

There are baby mum mums and toddler mum mums.  Puffs are for crawlers to practice the pincer grasp.

What does that mean for you? Do you only eat homemade food? I'm just wondering.

OP- We haven't tried mum mums or the others simply because I'm in no rush to fill her up on things other than fruit/veg and breastmilk but we waited until 6months for solids. so we are just getting into it really.

  • K has had them a few times. At first she didn't know what to do, but now she sucks and if a piece breaks off she will gum at it until she can swallow it. We give them to her just a few times a week to 'practice' chewing. Right now when we feed her she swallows her purees like they are formula! I worry that if she comes across anything with a chunk, she will choke, so this has helped ease my mind.

We also just tried puffs tonight. Only three of them. She 'chewed' each one.

of course not.  but we do try to only eat stuff from the us.  google "china" and "food safety issues."

This!  it is bad enough that basically all the toys are made in China.  I can't bring myself to feed them to my DD.  I actually returned the box to the store.
