Food Allergy

Milk free food ideas for 8 month old?

So, my son is FTT and we have had some struggles with feedings his whole life. Long story short he went on Alimentum at 2 months old (switched from BFing) because we thought he was Milk/Soy protein intolerant. We saw an immediate improvement. However, he stopped gaining any weight at 5 months and was diagnosed FTT shortly before 8 months. We have seen two GI's, a feeding therapist, a neurologist, etc...with no answers. Finally we went to the allergist last week and just as I suspected he is allergic (severely) to milk (oh and peanuts and dust mites). So we think maybe he is reacting to the Alimentum since it still has a small amount of the milk protein in it. We tried to switch to Elecare, but he refused to drink it so we switched to Soy (he tested fine to this). He is drinking ok now, up to 18oz yesterday from 10-13 we were getting on Alimentum at the end....However, we have been trying desparately to pack more fat and cals in wherever we can. We do the olive oil in all his food, we try to get avocado in although he has decided he hates it, etc...

So any ideas for dairy free finger foods?

Specifically I am looking for dairy free mum-mum's, dairy free teething biscuits. I think he is somewhat behind on the finger food thing...so any ideas are welcome. We do have dairy free puffs that he loves. I think we will try egg yolks soon too (tested fine for all parts of egg)

Also his Similac Soy formula says it is dairy free but is made on dairy equipment or something. Should I be finding a different formula?

  • my son HATED avocados until i introduced it in a guacamole style. I got the guacamole dish and made it with tomatoes, onions, salt, lime juice and fed it to him on a chip - he may be too young for all of this but keep in mind to try.. I tried it when he turned 1 and he LOVED it.. but hated plain avocado.  Till this day he eats about 1/2 an avocado a day (guacamole style).

I personally think he's still young, some people don't introduce solids until their LO is one. So as long as he's drinking his formula and having his pureed fruits and veggies, you don't need that much more fat. Is he thriving?

There are only dairy free mum mums for toddlers.

Whole foods has a teething cookie that's dairy and soy free (the box has a pale looking kid on it).

Cheerios and earths best bites are also dairy/soy free.

How about yogurt? you can find soy yogurt or coconut yogurt (made by "so delicious" and it's milk/soy free and sooo yummy!)

No he is failure to thrive. That is why we are trying to get calories and fat in wherever we can. He hasn't gained weight in 3 months and has fallen off the curve. Hopefully the milk allergy was the root of the problem since we haven't found any other definitive answers. And he doesn't drink his formula well. On the Alimentum he would typically drink 10-13oz...15 was a GOOD day. He got up to 18 yesterday so maybe he will do better on the soy. Time will tell.

Thanks for the tips on the food ideas. I am going to go out and get some of the teething cookies and yogurt!

  • If you are trying to pack on pounds (we had weight issues too)- I'd skip the mum mums/puffs etc.  Those are pretty empty calories.  The hard part at his age is making sure that every single bite he has is as calorie dense as possible.

The Kashi cereal bars are dairy free and if you put it in tiny pieces he could probably gum those just fine (they're crazy soft and fall apart easily).  Sweet potato fries are also easy to gum down and nutrient rich.  Have you tried coconut yogurt?  We also gave my son "smoothies" of coconut kefir+ naked brand juice.  That added tons of calories.  If he'll tolerate it- add an additional scoop of formula to his bottles or talk t your dr. about Doucal.  We used formula or coconut milk to make all of my son's oatmeal/baby cereal to add calories there too.

    Gotcha.

Does he eat oatmeal? if so, make it with formula (or with soy milk if that was okayed).  The regular oatmeal by "earths best" is great and my son is 2 and still eats it.

Not sure if his age can have rice.. plain ol' rice.  If so, you can make the regular minute rice in formula instead of water.. you can add some agave or brown sugar to make it look like rice pudding (not too much sugar.. like a sprinkle).. or favorite fruit into the rice mixture.  Overcook the rice.. put a lot more milk into the mixture than it actually calls for so it soaks up more and it's softer.

I completely agree.. my nutritionist told me the same thing and we had to give it up (including cheerios).

Also - quinoa  is a good and healthy food.

  • Thanks Ladies! We try not to give him puffs very much. Just to occupy him while we make his dinner usually...so maybe 5 a day. He is extremely picky and so far the whole formula is our biggest struggle. He seems to just plain not like it so if we try to make his oatmeal out of it or anything he refuses it all together. Hopefully that will change with the formula switch, but we will see. I know it will get easier as he gets older and can eat more foods...I will definitely try your suggestions and appreciate it!

  • Avocadoes, Hummus, yogurt made from Coconut Milk (so delicious brand), whole grain crackers, applesauce, kashi makes a fruit bar now - kind of like a nutrigrain bar except healthy.  I would seek out some vegan blogs. They made my life so much easier!
  • My son is lactose intolerant, we do give him the occasional organic aged cheddar cracker and mac n cheese made with aged cheddar and lactose free milk. My point is I may not be as strict as you need to be, but here are a few ideas.

Earth's Best makes a fruit bar, I don't have the box anymore so I can't check to see if it's dairy free.

Sweet potato fries are yummy, I would try those, home made with some cinnamon.

My son will eat meatloaf, I make it with just minced onions and minced peppers. If you crumb it he may be able to eat it with his hands.

We also give him Jones sausages, they have lite that's cut with rice, I'm pretty sure it's diary free. We cut it length wise and then into half moons, he'll eat 4 for breakfast.

I've tried soy yogurt with him and he'll eat it but I give it to him very sparingly.

Amy's Organic makes diary free burritos and also diary free/gluten free burritos. My son can eat almost an entire burrito for dinner, it's just rice and beans. I sometimes add chicken sausage to bulk up the calories and protein.

    GL!
