My mw is out of the office today and I feel a cold coming on, so I was just going to check with you ladies and see if any of you have taken Emergen-C while pregnant or had gotten approval from your doctor . . .
I've always been afraid to take mega doses of any vitamin while pg. I've also read about vitamin c being used to induce m/c, but of course that's just internet hooey and I don't know if it's true. I'd try to talk to your midwife before taking it, though. Feel better.

YES!!! I specifically asked my doc about this bc I love Emergen-C in winter season as a preventive measure. I brought a packet to the office and showed him the content. He said, don't ever bother with that if you are taking your Prenatals because it's basically the same stuff and whatever you do not absorb right away you will pee it out. Notice that after you take a massive dose of Vit C you pee very yellow... Basically that's what happens if you take Emergen-C. Your body will expell what it does not absorb. He said if I wanted to still take one in the am and then one in the pm that was fine, but since that's just Vitamins, not to expect some miraculous healing... and I get that but it still makes me feel good knowing I am supplementing with something when I am feeling under the weather.
Drink some OJ or eat and orange. That's how I battle my colds always helps and tastes way better then any medication. Plus make sure to be drinking lots of water and rest.

This! I have been drinking alot of fruit juice today, and sure enough, super duper yellow pee. It seems everything under the sun is enriched with tons of Vit C...so I doubt the Emergen-C is doing for you what it used to... other than costing you money (I was really surprised as to how expensive they are!). I totally understand how soothing it is to grasp a hot cup of steaming yummy-ness, so maybe some green tea, or hot cider, or even just hot milk, would help you feel good and be easier on the wallet.

I am a huge fan of Emergen-C and have always taken it whenever I feel the slightest "tickle" in my throat that signaled a cold. For the record, I've also been on pre-natals for 4 years non-stop since conceiving/miscarrying in '08 as well and I still find value in the addition of Emergen-C. I made a point of asking my OB at my first appt with her what her stance was on it, and she said while it probably wouldn't hurt, she didn't recommend it. A couple visits later, I had caught a cold which was 10x worse because I was pregnant and asked her again if I could take the Emergen-C and she then said, yes it's ok to take it and that it's better to take it and not get a cold at all then to not take it. Great! Now she tells me...!
I had also done a google search - lots of mixed reviews but basically the doctors only concern is getting too much Vit C so I only took half at a time when I did feel a cold coming on while pregnant.
I was told by my nurse midwife last pregnancy that Emergen-C is fine. She recommended it to me for getting my electrolytes up while pregnant, and I took half a packet daily mixed into OJ (could've done a whole packet..and did if I felt sickish, but did half typically just due to the fact that I only liked the Cranberry which I had to drive an hour to buy when I needed more...LOL!). It made me feel so much better when before since I threw up daily I had been sluggish. I drink it this pregnancy too now that it is cold season. It is fine though.
