Poop on floor of room at night?!?! WWYD??

DS (age 4.5 yrs) has been fully potty trained for 2 years now.  Tonight I put him to bed like normal and then heard him about 1.5 hrs. later kind of whimpering and crying.  Got up went down the hallway and immediately smelled it.  He was standing on the floor at the end of his bed, facing it and had pooped on the floor and peed on the bed!

I was shocked.  He was crying about it and kind of out of it so I cleaned up his bum and foot (some poop got on one heel) and asked him what was going on, if he felt sick etc.  His response no matter how I worded it "nothing".  I laid him in my bed while I cleaned up the floor and he was out like a light.

What would you do?  This is so odd, he's only ever even had probably 3 pee accidents and now this.  Should I call the pediatrician and have him checked out?  Is this a sign of anything bigger?  Or just let it go - maybe he was sleepwalking(sleeppooping) lol?  It's so out of the ordinary I am at odds with what to do about it!

Help!

  • Sleepwalking was the first thing that came to mind. The next was a nightmare/bad dream/deep sleep dream  that triggered it. I would talk to him about it later(once he's coherent) and reassure him he is not in trouble. If it happens again, talk to the Dr. about it. Once is an accident, more than that is likely some sleep or other bodily issue. This of course, is my unprofessional opinion. HTH!

  • Thanks.  I talked to him this morning and he is sticking to the "nothing" story.  He did seem to remember it, but was mostly freaked out if it was still on the floor.  I'm going to let it go for now (and shampoo the carpet - blech!) and make sure he doesn't have an upset tummy today, get the flu etc.  and if it was a one time thing (fingers crossed) then I'll leave it at that.

Oh the joys of parenting! :P

  • I would just let it go, and not worry. Sounds like he just wasn't fully awake, maybe he was extra tired, did quite wake up enough.

  • I wouldn't do anything.  He was probably exhausted (especially since he immediately fell back to sleep on your bed) and felt the need to poop and in his sleepy state, combined with being very young he did the best darn job he could.
