TMO Advice Needed Please!

My DH is in the Marines and will be going overseas. I am planning on moving home from California to Michigan when he leaves for his deployment. We know very little about the military moving our things. My biggest worry is getting an apartment set up in order to be moved. So I have a few questions...

How did you set up a new lease while being in a different state?

Is there anything you wish you would have been told about the military moving your things before you moved?

I would like any and all advice/input you can offer!

Thank you!

Re: TMO Advice Needed Please!

  • If you made the decision on your own to move home during the  deployment the military wont pay for that OR move you - if you were PCSing on the other hand they would pay ... but if you optionally are moving away from your current duty station - thats all on you expense wise

That being said we just PCSed from NC to CA and TMO was FABULOUS with our stuff on both ends.

I also meant to add when we were in NC and were setting up our lease in CA (off base) we did everything by email and sent payment for  the security deposit by snail mail.

  • We're going through our first PCS in two weeks and doing everything sight unseen. We'll be going from KS to DC.

    Advice I've gotten:

    Feed the packers and movers
Take pictures and write down the serial numbers
Organize everything so like items will be packed together
Get as minimalistic as you can
Watch everything and even consider recording or having a friend/family member watch

  • If he is deploying and you are moving home then TMO won't move you or pay for it like the pp said. Can you clarify?

Usually leasing office's can e-mail or fax you a copy of the lease and then you can send it back.

  • Im obviously very confused! My DH has had sever people who he works with including some higher ups tell him that TMO would move us if he deployed.

I searched some places on the internet and they all said that a deployment is not  Permanent Change of duty Station, is this right? And the TMO will only move you if you have a PCS. So maybe they all dont know what they're talking about.

Do you think if I were to call TMO they would be able to give me a definite answer?

The information you have found is correct, the people your husband has talked to are incorrect. TMO will definitely give you a straight answer, but it is that they will not move you home for a deployment.

I got really sick at the beginning of this pregnancy and chose to go home because I would need more hospitalization and surgery. We paid out of pocket to get out of our lease, put stuff in storage, and make the trip home. I just returned to Camp Pendleton this week and paid out of pocket again for the trip here, Budget truck, etc.

  • My DH is Army, and his deployment situation was such that the Army did pay to move me. BUT, this was a specific assignment and I think that they may have changed how they do that now. So, there might be a *slim* chance of the Marines paying for your move, but I highly doubt it. Your DH needs to get his orders and see what they say.

As far as finding a place to live from far away--the Internet! I would check with the housing office to see if they have a list of preferred landlords/complexes and/or a list of banned landlords/complexes. Avoiding the hassle of a bad landlord or apartment complex is helpful.

Good luck with figuring out the move.

  • The TMO advice you got was correct, TMO will not pay for it.

I am confused about the lease question though, if you are moving home? Are you talking about getting an apt in your home town, or are you talking about sub-leasing (sub-letting) your apt in CA? While TMO won't pay to move you, you can break a lease for a deployment. If you are looking to get out of your current apt, you can do that.

As far as moving goes I moved back in with my parents while DH was deployed once and we paid to move all of our stuff and I stored it in my parents basement. DH PCS'd after the det so we did a DITY move since everything was already packed. We at least wound up breaking even, so that might be an option for you.

  • Thank you ladies for your advice! I just called them and they said that they will not move me home. The way she explained it to me is that the military is paying for him to move overseas and that they wont pay for a whole other move too! And it just clicked for me, DUH!  The military isnt going to pay for TWO moves! :)

Now I just have to get my DH to believe me! He doesnt understand why people are telling him that we can be moved when we cant.. and wants to believe what all the other higher ups that are telling him.

    Thanks again!

  • It depends on who his "higher ups" actually are - if they are not married they might not know - just because they've never had to do that - and if they are not married chances are they dont care to find out lol

you were correct though - a deployment is NOT a PCS.
