Mothers of baby girls...

Is it normal for a newborn girl to have a bit of a bloody discharge? Its kind of like a stringy mucous. Nothing heavy at all. We're going to the doctor for her one week check up on Tuesday, and I plan on asking there but wanted to check here too. TIA!

Re: Mothers of baby girls...

  • Although this didn't happen with my LO, I read in my baby book that it's completely normal for newborn girl's to get bloody discharge from all your leftover hormones from delivery.

  • Yes, my little girl had it.  It is because of your hormones-it's kind of like a "mini-period" for babies.  Harmless, and will go away in a few days.

  • Yes, my newborn daughter has this too. My pediatrician says this is completely normal...it has to do with the amount of hormones (gotten from Mom) that the baby has pumping through their body right after birth. Whitish and slightly bloody discharge is ok and will go away once the hormones start to clear out. Good luck :)
  • My LO had mucus like discharge, and it went away pretty quickly.

  • My LO didn't have the blood but she did have a discharge that only happened twice.

Also, with little girls - they can have milk leak from thier nipples. Same reason as why they sometimes can bleed a little. I read that one day in my pregnancy book and no joke - that night, my little girl had 1 drop leak out. But it was only that once.

  • Yep, normal.  Your hormones cross the placenta during delivery so your baby gets them.  So it's like a menstrual period :)  Should only happen for a little while and then it will stop.

At one of our earlier appts my daughters nipples seemed the swollen..the dr then said it was milk! he pressed a little..and yea! it was weird but totally normal do to our hormones. Eventually they went down ..it only lasted a few days
