Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

will not drink whole milk

We have given DD a sippy of water with meals since 6 months.  It was always for decoration and she never drank anything from it.  Eventually we found a straw sippy cup that she will take 1 to 3 sips from and then throws it on the floor.

I bf so I never really worried too much about it.

Now she is almost 13 months and we have been trying to transition her to drink cows milk.  She was nursing three times a day.  I dropped the middle of the day session and offered a sippy of milk.  She refuses it everyday and just crys.

DH has been giving her bottles of frozen breast milk in the mornings and the last few days he has mixed in cows milk.  She refused the mixed ones after one sip and then crys.  We are now out of the freezer stash.

Pedi says she should have 6oz-24oz of milk a day with a target range of 12oz-14oz.  I think she averages less than 1 ounce of milk a day and maybe 3 oz of water a day.  She is a good eater overall but won't eat cheese and tolerates yogurt only once in a while.  Her crying with the milk is immediate so I don't think it is any kind of allergy kind of thing.

I am still nursing before bed and don't want to drop that session until we figure out the day time stuff but part of me thinks that night time session is what keeps reminding her of nursing and the comfort that comes with it and I might be better of just dropping it and letting it become a distant memory.

I am back to work and after 9 months of pregnancy and 13 months of nursing I am so so ready to have my body back to myself for a little while.  I feel selfish but its true.

Any suggestions? (we own every sippy cup on the market and have a whole shelf dedicated to our sippy cup graveyard, she will take a few more sips from our "adult" cups than she does from the sippy but it still doesn't seem to help much)

So frustrated.  I hate hearing her cry and cry when she is normally so happy.

Re: will not drink whole milk

  • Keep on trying. DD also refuses whole milk, 2% milk, soy milk, chocolate milk... you get the idea. She does eat 1-2 pieces of cheese daily + yogurt. And I give her a calcium supplement. You cant force them. You can also try carnation instant breakfast. Good luck

  • My DD is not a great milk drinker.  She has gotten better, but when she first transitioned to wcm from formula, she hardly drank any milk at all.  Then I discovered  that she liked yogurt smoothies (like the banana flavored YoBaby smoothies), so I began mixing yogurt smoothie with milk and she will drink a whole cup of it at a time that way.

  • DS wouldn't drink milk for the first month or so we tried. I stopped giving him a bottle at night and kept offering him a cup of milk and he would keep spitting it out. Then one day he started drinking it and is finally back up to about 20 oz a day. It's frustrating, but she will get there.

  • It sounds like it is the milk taste rather than the cup.  I'd try a different kind of milk...  goat's milk, almond milk, etc.

  • DS was this way at first, even though he'd drink water from a sippy fine. A fellow bumpie (don't remember who) suggested adding a little juice to the milk (we used apple) and it worked like a charm. (DS had never had juice, only water.) We added less than an ounce of apple juice (I think the bumpie said she used orange juice) to his sippy of milk and he drank the whole thing with no problem. We transitioned from adding apple juice over about 2-3 weeks. GL!

  • My dd just started drinking plain wcm and is only drinking 6-12 oz a day and she is 16 months. Prior to that the only way she would drink it was if I made a smoothie out of it. I pur?ed wcm with bananas and strawberries. Have you tried making smoothies with milk?
