Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Noises and weird breathing in sleep??

Once in a great while DD will start to make whimpering noises in her sleep and almost hold her breath and then start breathing very fast and continue to make noises. When I try to wake her she is in a very deep sleep but can wake up. Last night she did it after being awake until 11:30 (we are having some sleep issues after her cold) and she was really tired. It freaks me out and I am just trying to see if this is something other babies do, it could be a nightmare I guess....

Re: Noises and weird breathing in sleep??

  • Sarah also whimpers in her sleep--i'm not sure if she's dreaming (maybe it's like a dog barking in it's sleep??).  We took Sarah to the doctor a few months ago for the weird breathing.  It sounds like what you're describing--our daycare called it "retracted breathing" (i think).  but our doctor told us it's common when baby's have a cold and their noses are stuffed up.  We sit her up a little when she does it now or if she's in her crib, we try to change her position and it usually helps.  Our doctor said if it continues to happen, we should bring her in again so if it's happening a lot, you might want to call your pediatrition.
