Cloth Diapering

Washing CDs question

I know that I have read people say that you needed to add extra water for a cold rinse before washing in hot. I just don't think I can commit to carrying extra water downstairs... so, my washer has a soak setting and I put it on that with cold water. Then I'll wash in hot... think that is sufficient?

Re: Washing CDs question

  • Just went to turn on the washer again after the soak cycle, and shew.. they still stink. I know I haven't used soap yet, so looking forward to actually getting them clean!

  • I would do a quick pre-rinse first before you soak.  Otherwise you are just soaking your diapers in pee and poop so they probably would stink ;-)

  • I agree the rinse is key......I was just doing a soak at first, and they smelled....now that I do a true rinse, stink is gone!
  • Cold wash, hot wash w/soap, hot wash.
  • I skip the initial cold wash entirely so it is hot wash with plenty of detergent, cold rinse, extra cold rinse and so far zero stink issues.  We're still EBF so perhaps that will stop working but I say try what you think may work and if you don't run into problems run with it.  Our FL makes some of the "recommended" wash routines next to impossible, so we're just doing what works.
  • We do a quick cold wash, hot wash with detergent, extra rinse.

We do one wash a month with a little bleach for the stinkies (stash is 95% BG 4.0's).

  • We cold wash once with soap, then hot wash with soap, then dry twice. almost 11 months, haven't had any issues with smell. I do try to air dry them once a month or so, if possible, on a sunny day to bleach. I wish I could do that more, but we're usually washing at night.

  • I do a quick cold rinse w/no spin (hopefully the extra water in the dipes tricks my washer into adding more water for the wash since they're heavier), then a hot wash w/soap with a soak and an extra rinse. Then I usually dry my inserts and PF in the dryer on low and hang my covers to dry. I hang them all in the sun when I can (1-2 times a month) and have added a little bleach once when the diapers got stinky (most of ours are also BG4s).

  • Everyone has their own way of washing diapers. I simply do a cold rinse, hot wash w/ detergent, cold rinse. Then I either line dry or tumble dry depending on the weather. I've been doing it for 2.5 years and it hasn't failed me yet!
