Any tips for keeping her awake while BFing?

So I try all of the tricks I've heard of... strip her down to her diaper, blow on her, tickle her, wet washcloth... but our LO still likes to doze off while nursing.  Any tricks?

Also, when we're getting ready to nurse, she has this new thing where she grunts and strains and fights to latch on... it's humorous, actually.  It takes 10-15 minutes to get her to latch on good, and then she'll nurse away.  Any insight?

TIA!

Re: Any tips for keeping her awake while BFing?

  • The one thing that always work for me is rubbing her hair the wrong way. Instead of smoothing it down, rub the opposite direction. Another thing that wakes her right up is taking the boob away. Lol The second she feels me pulling it away, she is a monster! She latches good, but unlatches & relatches multiple times throughout the feeding.

  • How damp and cold is the washcloth? Switching sides, walking around or outside are also suggestions I've gotten. My doula explained the delayed latching and grunting and general dragging out of the process as actually "playtime." The boob is a comfortable happy place for babies to be so sometimes they'll treat it as more than just a food source. If your baby seems frustrated (I know it's frustrating for you!) then it might be something different but it's an explanation to consider.

  • Good luck, I know from experience with DD how frustrating that can be.  But I don't have any suggestions other than what you mentioned...

  • For both of my sons, I have found that when they fell asleep nursing I can kind of stroke the bottom of their jaw...near their ear, and that will stimulate them enough to get them nursing again.

  • i agree with the stroking of LO's jaw, and i will tickle his back--this works for us.

if LO is grunting, straining when you first put her to the breast make sure you are guiding her head with your hand.  i was always nervous to do this with DD but not this time--literally cup the back of LO's head and bring her right to your nipple, if she feels your nipple against her top lip she should open her mouth wide and latch right on.  i learned this from the LC while in the hospital--DS was having a hard time latching...i felt like i had never BF before even though i had with DD for a year!!

  • Strip her naked, blow on her belly, tickle her feet, stimulate her as much as you can. This stage really passes very quickly. I don't remember doing this much after the first week or two. :)
