March 2012 Moms

How are you researching your registry?

What is everyone doing to get a registry together? How are you researching? I love the March 2012 page too much to ask for advice on EVERY SINGLE item and was wondering how everyone here is finding what they need and the best product for them. I am taking a friend who has 4 kids, 2 are 4 month old twins, window shopping at Babies R Us. I figure she would be good to narrow down the What do I need, What don?t I need, and What would I like lists. I have also signed up for a year of Consumer reports online. They have a HUGE baby section and it is only 25$ for a year. What is everyone else doing for research? I would love to hear some ideas that I never thought of.   And when I say ?registry? what I really mean is everything that you are planning on getting for the baby whether someone else buys it or not. Thanks ladies (and any men out there)

Re: How are you researching your registry?

  • I am doing about the same as you. Taking my SIL with to register, and then I'm also having a friend look over my registry to see if there's anything I'm forgetting. As far as research, my mom is letting us use her Consumer Reports membership, so I've been doing a lot of research there. I've also found that once I get something narrowed down, it's also helpful to look at product reviews on Amazon. Consumer Reports is great, but it doesn't always give the full story. Example: I was researching jogging strollers, and there was one that they had rated pretty high, but when I looked at consumer reviews on Amazon, a TON of people said they had problems with the front wheel wobbling.

Sounds like you are on the right track as far as research!

  • With DS, DH and I registered at BRU one afternoon/evening.  We got to as much as we could, and just went with our gut.  Then, I spent the next several weeks editing my registry by reading the reviews, etc...

We did use Baby Bargains while registering for the big stuff.

My one big piece of advice- don't register for clothes, and skip things that really seem unnecessary (eg, for us it was the wipes warmer, bottle warmer, sterilizer, etc...  we washed DS's bottles in the dishwasher that sterilizes anyway and warmed his bottles in a cup of hot water)

  • I've found this website to be helpful for some things: https://www.lucieslist.com/

I've also asked a good friend for her review of what they liked, what they didn't like, and what they wished they had gotten.

  • Two word.. Baby Bargains.  That's been like my Bible in researching stuff.  I also lurk the Baby Gear board a little but Baby Bargains has been my go to.

THIS! I bought Baby Bargains and intend to start reading it tonight. Aside from that, I figured I'd google product reviews and whatnot to follow up on the items that we are leaning toward.

  • Talking with friends/family with babies. They have the most unbiased honest opinions on what they needed and didn't need.

Once I've selected an item - looking up reviews on Amazon and other websites to see what others have said

Also I went into the store to register and test drove a few items. I'm a see/touch/feel person so just looking online wouldn't suffice.

I have also looked in a few pregnancy magazines, but realize that the majority of those subliminally want you to buy the items they "Review"

That is what I did, too. I printed the sample registry from right here on The Bump and then I used my Baby Bargains book to research each item. I didn't feel the need to read it cover to cover and if I needed more info on something I went to Amazon and Babies R Us to read reviews. There were a few items I skipped for now such as a high chair and toddler car seat as the baby won't be needing those for awhile. I also didn't register for clothes since most people will want to buy them as shower gifts. Creating a baby registry was so much harder than our wedding registry since most of that stuff was based on looks. I wanted to make sure we are getting items that are safe and durable. After hours of research, I feel good about the choices I made.

I have a friend who is a new mom and when she did her registry, she and DH literally went in and scanned things without any research at all. Now that the baby is here and she is putting some of those things to use, she said she regrets not looking into anything first.

  • I'm going to plan on reading online reviews to pick the best items for us. I am going to try to keep the amount of baby stuff to a minimum if I can and borrow my neice's bouncers/swings, etc so that I don't have to buy or register for that stuff since they use it for a short time and we don't have room to store all that.
