Play house or kitchen?

I'm posting up a board because DS will be 2 in February.  I'm sorry if this gets asked a billion times!

We want to get DS a big ticket item for Christmas and are torn between a play kitchen and a play house.  We know he would like a kitchen because he's played with one at a friend's house and loved it.  We think he would like a house because he likes being inside of things. We have the space in the house for either (both, actually, but not the $ to spend on both!) but wanted to know which your LO prefers before dropping that kind of cash.

Thanks!

Re: Play house or kitchen?

  • We had my Mom get DD#1 a kitchen last year.  She doesn't play with it as much as I thought she would.  She gets more excited about the shopping cart, which she loves.  I am looking at a play house for this year since I think it would be a better gift down the road with two girls now.

  • We have a kitchen and a play house, and DD definitely uses the kitchen more. But, the playhouse is outside and the kitchen is in the playroom, so it's more accessible.

    Same here!

  • We have a rose petal cottage and a play kitchen.  Play kitchen gets used WAY more.  In fact, for Christmas we're getting her some more accessories like the pizza kit from M&D, a toy microwave and so on.

  • IMO, get a nice play kitchen and a cheap play tent instead of a play house...best of both

  • DS has the kitchen and plays with it all the time.  He just loves it.  We don't have a play house though, I am sure he would play with that a lot too.  I think either one is a great choice.  Sorry not much help.

This is what I would do.  We have a play kitchen that DD uses every day and a play tent that we bring out every so often.  The tent gets used for a couple days and when she gets bored with it we put it away again.  She actually asked (and helped) to put it away today!

  • Another vote for a kitchen. DD got one a year ago, and she still plays with it every day. You don't have to get a giant plastic one that takes up half a room. DD has a small wooden one from KidKraft. It fits in a corner of our living room, and I think we paid $100, maybe $150, for it last year on Amazon. Tons of deals around Christmas!

  • We bought DS both off craigslist. He likes to play with others in the house and rarely plays by himself in it.  He will happily play with or without others when he plays kitchen.  I like the house because we can put it outside when the weather is nice and since it's so large we can entertain many children with it (it's the Step 2 Naturally Playful Clubhouse Climber).  The kitchen can accommodate 2 kids playing together and is really nice when he is trying to be too helpful while I'm cooking dinner - I can send him to his kitchen to pretend to slice or pour.

    Hope this helps.

Yep. Yep.   Also, some play kitchens are designed with a "window" / bar top that could really double as a house anyway.
