stretch mark cream

Just wondering what cream you are using on your belly to prevent stretch marks. Last pregnancy I used Tummy Honey Stretch by Bella B but was told today that it has caffeine in it. I don't drink much caffeine but it had me wondering. What are you using? Anyone heard of mama mio?

Re: stretch mark cream

  • I have the same question. I am using Cocoa Butter Formula  from Palmer's but I heard is not so good...I don't have stretch marks yet but I am prone to that genetically...hopefully I can prevent them...

  • Friends told me that stretch mark cream is a waste of money because a lot of it is genetic. I know people that have used it and gotten really bad stretch marks anyway. People told me just to keep my belly moisturized. I've been using Palmer's cocoa butter 1-2 times a day and it makes my skin look and feel great. I'm 25 weeks with a prominent belly and no signs of stretch marks so far (fingers crossed!).

That's what I'm using, both in body lotion and tummy butter version. Why wouldn't it be good?

  • I love Mama Mio.  I used their tummy oil during my last pregnancy.  The gift set with the lotion, body wash, and oil is nice too.  Sign up for their emails too, they sent some good discount codes around Thanksgiving and Christmas last year.

The PP is right, there is no proof that creams help prevent stretch marks. The only thing I have read is to keep weight gain within the recommended amount and to gain it slowly. My doctor told me to send my mom flowers if I didn't get stretch marks when I asked him about it!

With that said, I would still use something. The cream will help with the itching that is associated with the skin stretching though. That will probably be especially helpful in the winter months!

This.... it IS genetic. The cream relieves itching of the skin, stretch marks actually occur just beneath the surface of the skin, so lotion could not prevent that. Luckily after you have the baby and give it some time, some of the marks do fade..

Right. However, my skin is really dry so I chose to use all kinds of cocoa butter products and I am loving it. Plus Palmers is really inexpensive.

What I wonder about though is why cocoa butter is not safe in pregnancy. Seems like everyone is using it AND they have pregnancy specific products.

  • I use bio oil and lubriderm.  I'm sensitive to anything with coco and shea butter in it.

  • I love Mama MIO too! I don't care if stretch marks are genetic--it feels and smells so good!

Caffeine is a common ingredient in anti-cellulite treatments or under eye treatments. It has a temporary anti-inflammatory effect. Topical applications of caffeine are harmless and there's no reason to avoid them during pregnancy. It's not going to cause the same effect that drinking caffeine would.

Personally, I am using Jason vitamin E cream. It's cheap, simple, and it absorbs well. I know it's not going to prevent stretch marks, but it makes my skin feel less itchy.

  • There's nothing you can do. If you're going to get them (and it's determined by your genetics), you're going to get them. No amount of cream is going to change that. Save your money.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut
  • I was using Bio Oil but it wasnt lasting all day. Now I'm using the Palmers Tummy Butter. It's greasy and thick enough to last all day but still absorbs so it doesnt get on my clothes. I'm happy with it so far. I'm using it mainly because my skin is so dry that it's stretching and it hurts if it's not smothered in moisturizer...But also *kind* of hoping it will help prevent stretch marks. I know it's genetic, but a girl can still hope.

  • unfortunately it doesnt matter how much and how often you use the creams/lotions/oils ... all it really does is helps with the itching and keeps it moisturized.  I didnt have one stretch mark before i gave birth but now i have a select few on the belly and quite a few on my sides.  Its all genetic so dont stress over getting the right cream because it will happen no matter what if its meant to.  Good Luck :)

  • My Dr said stretch mark creams are a gimmick and there is nothing you can do to prevent them, its all in your genetics. She did say the cream does help with some of the itching, so just find one you like and stick to it. I use paraben free Palmers cream and like it.
  • I'm using Mama Mio strech mark oil. I LOVE It! I've always had a very small frame and so far have gained about 17 lbs (I'm 20 weeks). I have never been to the weight or size that I am currently, and so far no stretch marks. My mom said for sure I would get stretch marks because of how small I was- and so far nothing. I apply it everyday. This stuff is like gold to me, I highly recommend it. People who say the oil creams don't work in preventing stretch marks, I say BS it's totally working on me (at least the Mama Mio one is and I would not want to try anything else)

This is the absolute best I have found.  It will even take care of old ones.

  • I just think it's a little funny that anyone thinks stretch mark creams "work"! Are pregnancy stretch marks different than non-pregnancy stretch marks? The answer to that is no, so if creams worked, everyone would be basking in the glory of unmarked stomachs, boobs and thighs!!!
  • My DH worked in the restaurant business for years and has told me that coco butter is often used as a dehydrator to pull moisture out of foods. Not sure how exactly its supposed to moisturize your skin if dehydrates food.
