DS hates water. Won't drink it at all.
If it's not milk or juice, he throws the bottle or sippee cup down.
The other day, I gave him some Crystal Light Lemonade - just a small amount, like 4 oz and he loved it. Also gave him the Strawberry Orange Banana kind and he loved it also.
You think this is ok? I mean, I know it has the artificial sweetner, but I don't think that 4 - 8 oz a day would hurt him. I would think the juice would be worse. What do you ladies think?

What made me think the juice was worse, was that the pedi only said to give him 4 ounces or less of the juice. So the one serving, I don't think is worse.
But giving him juice everytime he wants something to drink, I think would be worse. Maybe I am wrong. Like I said, I only give him about 4 ounces of the Crystal Light to take place of a serving of juice. And it's pretty watered down also.
No it's not ok. It's 100% aspartame. It's a carcinogen. Like a pp said, just water down juice. OR throw fresh fruit slices in his water.

My dad is in the final stages of brain cancer, and has been using sweetener daily for almost 25 years. The dr's very much believe this is the cause. Please do your reseach on this!
We're not saying to give straight juice, we mean that you should flavor the water with a little juice instead of the Crystal Light. If you're worried about how much he's drinking you should probably water his juice down all the time.

Sounds like a Crystal Light is not a good idea. Ha. Glad I asked.
Thanks!
Thanks for the link! I really had no idea about all this stuff. Thanks!
Don't do Crystal Light. I thought it would be okay as DD refused milk AND water when we got rid of the bottle. She had liquid poo for over 3 weeks. First the pedi told us to us probiotics (at her 15 month appointment it'd only been a week of liquid like poo). We did that to no avail. Then nearly 2 1/2 weeks later I took her back in and right at the end of the appointment I let it slip that she was drinking Crystal Light and the pedi was like "WHAT!? Take her off it!" Her poo returned to normal within days. The fake sweetner was what was doing it.
ETA: When I finally gave her NO CHOICE about water or milk she began to drink it
I wouldn't... I don't give DD an opinion on what she's drinking. She either gets milk or water. She has never had juice.
If you are concerned that he won't drink if you don't flavor the water, then throw pieces of real fruit in the water.
Ditto what all the PP say about sugar vs. the artificial stuff. I used to buy a lot of "No Sugar Added" things, but most of that stuff has the aspartame in it so we do the full sugar stuff just very sparingly.
As far as juice I use the V8 V-Fusion light. It has a full serving of fruits and veggies at least and less sugar and no artificial sweeteners. IMO, that stuff is worse than juice. DS gets a sippy with juice in it with breakfast and I don't feel a bit bad about it. He loves his veggies, eats whole grains in breads and pasta and drinks milk with lunch and dinner.

The reason my pedi gave for only giving 4-6 oz of juice a day was because too much juice can cause loose bm's and a nasty diaper rash. It had nothing to do with sugar. I know this is true for my kids because if I don't water down their juice to 90% water/10% juice, they crap their brains out.
On another note, I have given my LO's very watered down iced tea or crystal light-type drinks if there was no milk, juice or seltzer options available (if we are at a restaurant or someone's house), and I didn't think it was a big deal, but that would not be something I would give them on a daily basis. Like everyone else said, artifical sweeteners are just very unhealthy.
