How did you tell about LO?

SH's post below had me reminiscing about how we told our family. I was wondering how everyone told family or close friends about their pregnancy?

Re: How did you tell about LO?

  • It's really funny that you ask this right now, because I was *just* going through "My Posts" to find something I posted about a couple months ago. One of the last ones on the list is this post from you:

Not quite the same, but I found it ironic.

H's family - He was at Basic and had his official (in uniform) pictures taken and sent to me. After I had my ultrasound, I put all the pictures of him in a pile with the u/s pic last and showed them to his parents one by one. When I got to the second to last one, I told them "Now this next one, H was most excited for me to show you". And then I showed it to them. MIL immediately started hugging me and BIL was so excited that he was going to be an uncle.

I told my sister by email. She had sent me an email with a crap load of questions, so I sent back this super long email answering her questions and threw in a "we're expecting!" somewhere in the middle of it. She had no idea what hit her!

My dad - I showed him the ultrasound picture. He was really confused. He thought I needed surgery. Apparently he had an MRI done on his knee and he said it looked the same? After explaining to him what the picture was of, he started crying.

My mom - Same as my dad, except she actually knew what it was :p

We lived in CA at the time and I really wanted to tell everyone in person. The only time I was going to be in FL with my extended family was for my sister's bridal shower. With her permission, my dad announced to everyone that he was going to be a grandpa (he cried again here). Everyone looked at my sister, who was mortified and just pointed at me.

  • That link was awesome, I liked reading it now that I feel like I know you guys even better.

I POAS at work, and the second line was very faint. I faked sick and went home with a digital test. Positive!  I yelled out to my friend/neighbor, who was gardening at the time. lol.

It was H's 34th Bday that day, May 25th. I went to Kohls and bought and I Love Daddy Frame, and two frame that held 3 pictures and said Grandkids. For H's, I just wrote on a piece of paper "We are having a baby" and put it in the frame in the picture spot. I made H open his gifts as soon as he got home at 4pm. I have never seen him smile so big.

We met H's parents for H's bday dinner, and I had wrapped up the frame with a pic of SS, Nephew, and my note "we are having a baby." MIL said that since I was eating a spicy dinner, it was certainly a boy.

Left the restaurant, and took my parents the last frame, With a picture of marley and sam in it, and the same note at the bottom.

Not the most creative thing, but it was fun. In less than a few hours I had informed everyone, and I was so early on. Needless to say, I was excited! I dont think I told the world, or Facebook until i was about 12 weeks.

  • We live 15 hours away from everybody so I just called most people.  I had a miscarriage in March so everybody was expecting me to get pregnant again soon. Our wedding was in June and my MOH was planning a girls weekend at the beach so I texted her and told her not to plan on buying to much alcohol for the beach.  Her response was "WTF?! Why not?  If you're knocked up I'm punching you in the boob."  I just sent back a smiley face and she called me crying because she was so happy for me. A lot of people down here found out when we had a girls night out and I wasn't drinking but still threw up in the parking lot.

I'm hoping we get pregnant this cycle (since AF finally showed up) so I can tell everyone at E's first birthday party.  I want to tell everyone that I want a group photo for her baby book and instead of saying "Say cheese!" say "I'm pregnant!" and take a picture of their reactions.

  • Sweethurricane: thanks for the repost, that was fun to read!

MarSamWhitney: I LOVE that you yelled your BFP at your neighbor!

Mrs.Hollywood: I love the idea of taking a pic of everyone's reactions, that would be awesome!

With DS we told everyone at Christmas with t-shirts. I gave my mom one that said "Grandma always says yes!" and my dad's said "Grandpa Bob" (his name is Robert, oh and DS calls him Bob Bob:) I told them these gifts wouldn't make sense unless they opened them together, saved them for last and video taped it. I still love watching that video. My mom screamed, my dad cried and my sister's fiance was like what's going on? My sister said "Kelsey's pregnant, stupid!"  With DH's family we gave his nephew a t-shirt that said "big cousin" and no one said anything. I asked FIL & MIL did you see what it said? Then I looked at them and they were both crying and said "yeh we are just so happy" (Then I was bawling)

With DD I had to tell everyone at different times. I sent DS to my sister's wearing a big brother t-shirt and she freaked out. I told my Granny over the phone and she said "Oh Kelsey what are you going to do?" then I told her it was planned and she had my mom and uncle 16 months apart. She said "That's right I did, well if you're happy I am too!" haha. I told my mom I needed to book newborn pics with her for January and I had to say it 3 times for her to get it. Since it was close to father's day, I put DS's 9 month pic and our first ultrasound pic of DD at 11 weeks in a frame and wrote "Due in January 2011". Everyone was kind of in shock with DD because they didn't think we'd be crazy enough to have 2U2, so obviously they don't know us that well.

  • I found a Hallmark card that said something to the effect of "We have a secret" on the cover, and on the inside it said "And it's going to keep getting bigger and bigger and bigger". I slipped it in with the Mother's Day cards and gave it to my Grandmother at lunch at her house, to DH's Grandmother at dinner with them, and I gave it to my Stepmom when we stopped by to see them (all on Mother's Day). They then of course announced to the whole family when they figured it out. However, I called my mom the day I POAS and told DH's mom and dad the day we had our first OB appointment 2 days after POAS (both very boring but we couldn't keep it in!)
  • #1-baby was due in the end of December, so I got a bib that said "tax deduction", wrapped it up and gave it to my parents. LOL

#2-my DS went to my family's house on father's day with a big brother tshirt on.

  • Because my pregnancy was such a shock and so advanced when I found out....

Called DH after I left the doctors office, sitting crying in the parking lot when I found out that I was pregnant and that I could be 20-22 weeks.  It was not a good doctors appt as several things happened to concern me as to the health of the baby.  Got my self together and went back to work.  This was on a Tuesday and I had an ultrasound scheduled for Thursday to figure age, condition, etc.  Told one co-worker because he immediately sensed something was wrong with me because he saw a few tears falling that afternoon.

On Wednesday broke down and told my best friend at lunch because I was so nervous.

Thursday DH & I went to the ultrasound, confirmed the pregnancy was healthy & viable, that I was 22 weeks and that we were having a boy.  My parents were on vacation so I called them and told them.  Told all of my co-workers by passing around the ultrasound picture.  DH called his family and told them.

The hardest one was telling our then 13yo (now he's 14) son that he was not going to be an only child any longer.  He studied the ultrasound - he was looking to confirm that it was mine & that it was a new one  - why he thought we would come up with a joke like that I don't know.

Not creative but we did not have time to be creative.
