Reflux and going dairy free

I finally bit the bullet and took Audrey to the pedi for possible reflux.  I'm so glad I did.  Our pedi was great and listened to our concerns and actually asked about symptoms that Audrey has that I hadn't even mentioned yet.  He prescribed Zantac and we started it last night.  He also wants me to eliminate dairy from my diet which I'm starting today.  Between these 2 things I'm really hoping it helps.

I was so afraid that if she was gaining weight (which she is), etc. that it might be brushed off and I just had a fussy baby.  I love our pedi.  Now I'm afraid of not having any dairy...good bye ice cream, cheese, yogurt, cream in my coffee!  I'm doing some research but does anyone have any tips on being dairy free?  Any substitutions for margarine/butter or yogurt?  I'm already planning on getting some soy milk for cereal and coffee.

Re: Reflux and going dairy free

  • We're pretty much dairy free in our house b/c DS has food allergies.  This website has been helpful in getting some info/making me think outside the box.  https://www.eatingwithfoodallergies.com/dairysubstitutes.html

If you check out Wegmans Natures Marketplace you'll find quite a bit that is dairy free.  Ians brand foods are free of the top allergens.  If you email them, they will mail you coupons.  Also, for treats- you can try Cherrybrook Kitchen baked goods.  Most of those are dairy free as well.  Ice Cream- get an ice cream maker and make your own!!!  You can use rice milk or soy milk and I'm sure you won't be able to tell the difference.  We use Rice Dream rice milk in our house.  The Vanilla is really good as coffee creamer too!  Good Luck!  It's a huge adjustment but once you get use to it, you won't even think about it anymore.

  • I battled reflux for about 5 years before i got it under control. As far as dairy free, its the lactose that is hard to digest for me personally. Hard cheeses and organic yogurt I can stomach.Margarine should already be dairy free since it's oil based. I've read mixed reviews about giving soy milk to children before puberty, almond milk tastes really yummy too. With the reflux, I can't have Columbian coffee at all. I can have all others even with half n half w/o any problems. You might want to look into that too. My GI doctor basically taught me how to control the reflux w/o needing medication after a while. Pineapple juice or grapefruit juice are great for digestion- about 4oz of 100% at the end of a meal will help a lot. Also some carrot juice (or V8 splash) will help with heartburn. I can't tolerate any fatty meat since its harder to digest too.
  • I just started a dairy-free diet last week for my LO. Earth Balance is a great butter substitute. I personally, can't stand soy milk in my coffee or cereal. I've heard rice milk is better and plan on trying that soon. A friend of mine has her mother living with her and her family and her mother has to be completely dairy free so she had a lot of great ideas for me. In the freezer section, there is a product called Coffee Rich which is like a dairy-free creamer. She uses that in place of milk in recipes. She said you just have to water it down a little if you would normally use something other than whole milk. She also said that coconut milk creamer is really good in coffee.

For a treat, Coconut Milk ice cream is AMAZABALLS! It's expensive to buy so I think I'm going to try to make my own since I have an ice cream attachment for my KitchenAid.

So far, I haven't had too much trouble cutting out dairy at home but yesterday we were at a family function and everything there had dairy in it. BTW read all labels, even the rolls at the family function were made with dairy :( Luckily I planned ahead and brought a backup meal for myself just in case!

    GL!
