LO is 5 1/2 months. He can sit for 5 seconds on his own but prefers to lean back on me. When did your LO learn to sit independently for several minutes? It seems like he's been in this phase of almost sitting for several weeks now.
I don't know my LO still isn't sitting independently. She will sit on my lap without me supporting her but the second I put her on the floor she topples over. I think it is a security thing. She will tripod for a little bit though.
She can sit on her own as long as she doesnt try reaching for anything to her sides usually she can straighten herself out but sometimes she falls. I usually sit there for 20 minutes or more behind her just incase. She has been wanting to sit since 3.5 months though ofcourse she couldnt really then but tried really hard. I think shes early.
My LO never did the tripod thing but we practiced with her a lot on our laps or supporting her on the ground. The day before her 5 month bday she started holding herself up a few seconds at a time and couple weeks later she could go several minutes. Now she pretty much can sit indefinitely unless she really wants something out of her reach. Then she'll fall over trying to get it.
This exactly.

By 5 months she could sit up on her own, but I couldn't leave her side because she would occasionally topple over and get upset. Now, I can leave her and she's totally fine, but I would say it's only been about 2 weeks of this comfort level. She'll be 7 months Monday.
DS will be 7 months in a week and has been sitting up for 2 weeks. He never really did the tripod and would topple right over. Then one day when I sat him down, he stayed up for about 30 seconds. Everyday he would be able to sit up for a longer period. He sits and plays with toys now, but I still put pillows behind him just in case he falls.
Nora has just been able to do it for more than 5 seconds this week, and I have to prop her in a sitting position. She can't get there on her own. (Or, at least, she hasn't tried that I've seen.) She can now sit unassisted for a minute or so before tipping over lol. It's cute to watch her try to catch her balance as she is tipping.
London started sitting unassisted independently at about 4.5 months but it took a couple weeks for him to not topple over after 10 seconds. Then it wasnt until he was about 7 months old that he could go from crawling position etc on his own to a sitting position on his own.
DD just turned nine months (eight adjusted) and still isn't. She can sit for about 10-15 seconds if you put something in front of her (like a toy) but otherwise, she's still toppling to the side. Getting a little worried now.
My son started sitting when I just about thought he might never do it. He could go a few minutes but no more than that until 6 1/2 months. A month later he can definitely dit up unassisted but still throws himself onto his back all the time, just because he prefers it.
He began sitting at just before 6 mo, but it took a week or two more for him to sit in a way that I wasn't feeling like I had to watch him constantly to catch a fall.
