Anyone Else Taken Prednisone?

Has anyone else taken prednisone while pregnant.  I went to the ER for severe pain in my shoulder that has radiated down my arm to my hand and up into my jaw and ear.  I also had on and off numbness that started last night and woke up this morning with a swollen left hand and fingers.  The doctor in the ER prescribed me prednisone for inflamed nerves in my shoulder and arm, after doing no test besides asking me to lift my arm as high as I could and to try to squeeze his fingers.  I am supposed to take 3 a day and I took my first dose with dinner tonight.  It worked for about 30 minutes, I could feel the swelling in my hand go down but after that 30 minutes all the swelling came back.  Prednisone is only a class c medication, but the doctor knew I was pregnant so I wouldn't think, or at least hope, he would prescribe me something where the risks outweigh the benefits.  I just don't know that I should take another dose with it being a class c medication and only having lasted half an hour.

  • I'm not sure if it's the same, but i take eye drops that are prednisone. I have had a virus in my eye and actually just had a corneal transplant. according to my pharmacist and all my doctor's it is okay. Like I said i'm not sure if its the same though..

    I have asthma and my daily med and my emergency inhaler is basically just steriods and I got the OK from my OB to continue taking both. If you are concerned maybe you could call the emergency line at your docs, or wait till monday and call your OB?

  • Was on two rounds of it while pregnant with DD. It kept me alive because I have severe asthma. I wouldn't take it for any other reason. Have you ever looked into a chiropractor or my favorite an acupuncturist?

  • I too am in the asthma ladies boat. I'm a little surprised that's what they Gave you as well, but I guess they went to school for a reason, & they know what's "best". I do know the med I take to control it is a class c drug with steroids, it's better to take the med for me. Good luck

  • I've been on Prednisone multiple times before (but not while pregnant) for severe asthma, since age 13.  I've never had any ill effects.  It's a fairly safe steroid, if one must take a steroid, and it really does work.  It takes a few days for it to really kick in long term.  Just call and ask your OB first thing in the morning for confirmation that the benefits outweigh any possible risks.

  • I've used it just like other ladies on the board for severe asthma and it will definitely get the swelling down...As far as steroids go it doesn't get much safer than that one. My doctor goes by the healthy mama, healthy baby mantra and when I brought up possibly needing Prednisone he wasn't concerned with it.

    I however only take it if I absolutely must as I don't react to it very well...It causes me to have severe mood swings x.x;;

  • I too have asthma, and was given prednisone a few weeks ago due to a flare up and respitory infection. My ob said it was fine, in a case of asthma I would say its better to take it, because if you dont get oxygen neither does baby. I might look into other options for your arm, but I wouldnt worry too much about the steroids...Ive taken them in other pregnancies and all turned out great.

  • I had to take a 2 week round of Prednisone last month for my severe PUPPP rash.  Out of all the steriod meds, Pred is the least likely to cross the placenta.  My baby is perfectly fine.  Doctors know better than you and they wouldn't prescribe something that they think would hurt the baby.

  • I took prednisone late in my 2nd trimester bc I had a severe allergic reaction to some bug bites. I was in so much pain, a lot of swelling and there was risk that it could cause other issues so the benefit outweighed the risk. I went to the ER of the hospital I deliver at. They checked with the OBs in L&D before giving me the script for a 3 day treatment.
