Hoping to wean LO off formula...need help

Hi ladies, My LO had a tongue issue "frendulum" and was not sucking properly and lost bunch of weight.  Also due to this, my breasts have not been stimulated enough to produce enough milk.  I got very sore nipples and had issues breastfeeding.  I am pumping for the past 2 days and supplementing with formula so that he can get back to his birth weight.  We finally got the tongue issue taken care of and LO is sucking much better now.

Since we supplemented him with formula, my breasts are not making a lot of milk.  I get about an ounce (using a pump) between the 2 breasts and my baby is 8 days old.  I am hoping the pumping will help.  Today, I tried to decrease formula and tried breastfeeding more. I swear he was on my breast most of the day and still cranky as if he is not getting enough.  I guess he likes the fast flow of formula getting into his belly vs. breastmilk. I am very stressed out about this whole situation and need some advice.  Any more tips on getting breast supply up and also weaning LO from formula.  TIA

  • See if you can get ahold if a supplementary nursing system so that you can stim your breasts while supplementing and get him sucking better.

  • Glad to hear that you got most of the issues resolved! It sounds like you're doing the right thing to keep LO at the breast as much as possible and pumping between feedings. For me, I could hardly get anything when I pumped early on, and then it slowly increased. If you think LO still needs more after nursing can you give some of what you pump in the bottle instead of formula? Or some formula and some pumped, slowly decreasing the amount of formula as you go? Good luck!
  • If you can hang in there, I would say just keep on doing what you are doing.  There's probably no better way than to just basically have him attached to you whenever he wants around the clock for a few days.  I remember when my son was a newborn, I read that comfort nursing actually stimulates milk supply, so I would literally let him stay attached and nap that way.  Of course, I didn't get to move around.  I kind of just watched movies, but it helped my supply and we could stop supplementing.

  • Oh, and a "nurse in"--laying in bed skin to skin for a day or two works wonders for a supply boost.

This and also the supplementer if the Nurse in doesn't do the trick...on a positive note - your body will adjust within a couple of days - so having LO attached to you all day won't last.

  • Keep doing what you're doing! My LO had a tongue tie, which is why I EP. His tongue tie wasn't snipped until 3-weeks. It was absolute murder on my nipples and he learned to overcompensate w/ his jaw since his tongue was limited and never got any better (and I just got fed up), so I just EP. Don't be discouraged about how much you let down to a pump. Your body was meant to let down to a baby. I think pumping just takes time. Drink plenty of water, get enough calories and just keep feeding that baby and your supply will increase.
