Babies: 6 - 9 Months

did you?

i am popping over from the january 2012 board. Im a first time mom and I was wondering what your take is on pregnancy classes...worth while or not so much? We are already signed up for a tour, i'm just talking about the classes themselves.

Re: did you?

  • For me, it was worth it! I can't say that it helped with the pain, haha, but we got a lot of good information. I probably don't think I would take it with a second child, but for the first time, I think it's a very good thing.

This.. totally agree.  I enjoyed our classes and it was a nice way to bond with DH.

  • I didn't.  I wanted to, but I got put on bed rest three days before my scheduled class. **sigh**  We did fine without it, but I would have liked both of us to feel more prepared to handle labor and delivery.  My husband, in particular, wasn't really sure how to be helpful to me, and I didn't know what to tell him.  It's not the end of the world if you don't or can't, but I'd recommend them.

  • I didn't and I think I did just fine without them. I only toured the L&D because my SIL had her son 2 months before I had mine. The only one I wish I had taken was the First Aid/Infant CPR.

  • I didn't take any childbirth classes, but I did take a breastfeeding class. It was much more helpful for DH than it was for me, but it was worth it to have him hear all the things I'd been reading for months.

If I had it to do over again, I would take a Bradley class because I really wanted a natural birth and I ended up not having one. If that's important to you, look into the different methods and take a class. If not, for my money you can take or leave the basic childbirth/infant care classes.

  • I took a birthing class and would have been fine without it. Unless you want to have a natural birth and take like, a bradley or hypnobirthing class, then Id say skip it. Unless you didnt pay any attention in 9th grade biology class and dont know a thing about labor. I wish I had taken a newborn care class. I thought, I know how to put on a diaper. But then the baby came and there were all these ointments and baby care tricks I knew nothing about. It just would have made me more confident as a FTM to take it. And I took a breastfeeding class, definitely do that if you plan to nurse, and do it closer to your due date.

  • The  tour was very helpful and helped calm some anxieties/answer questions. I took a Hypnobirthing class, which was pretty awesome and worth every penny.

  • I would recommend the child birth classes. I actually enjoyed them but I am an information junkie. They were very helpful to both me and my husband since I was planning a natural birth. Even if you planning on getting an epidural the second they allow it the classes can still be helpful. They not only teach pain management but also how labor progresses, postpartum care and complications, basic newborn care, and more. If this class is through your hospital you can also learn what some of their policies are such as how far dilated you need to be to get an epi or how long you will stay after having your baby.
  • i was over-informed from all the reading and talking to other mom friends, but my hubby really benefitted from the class we took (just a general Prenancy and chhildbirth 101 type of thing- it was a 6 hr class) and it was nice to have the time with him and other pregnant couples.

We went for ice cream after each class. So yes, it was worth it  Stick out tongue

  • I took a 8 week childbirth course taught by a doula with a natural slant and it was good. I already knew most things because I read every book out there, but it was good for hubby, and we met people and got some real world stories from the doula.

  • I took a day class and while I didn't learn much from it, it was still good to see a few videos of giving birth and hear from a hospital nurse about their particular procedures. But if you're planning on breastfeeding, I'd definitely sign up for a class on that. I didn't and wish that I had; we've got a great BF-ing relationship now, but it would have made the first couple of weeks with DS easier on me. The internet was a great help there during my pregnancy, but I could have used the extra help.

  • I was considering taking a birthing class and my doctor actually said that it wasn't worth it. I agree. I took an infant safety/cpr class and DH took a "daddy" class but that was it. I watched some births online and did some research about breathing techniques and whatnot but the long a$$ class is costly and not worth it IMO. Especially since you never know what type of delivery you'll end up having. My friend took the class and then ended up having a breach baby and getting a c section. :/
