First of all, let me say that I HATE dealing with insurance of any kind...health, homeowners, car, etc. I almost always get the sense that I am being swindled somehow...
Anyway, when we got our homeowners policy originally we planned to subscribe to a home security system (the house has the equipment installed already), but never got around to it (moved in 2 months ago). Today I was talking to our insurance agent on another policy we have (thus the vent above) and she asked for the paperwork documenting our subscription to a service, otherwise our premium is higher, so I'm trying to do the math here and see if the subscription is worth the discount. Anyone have a home security system and would you mind giving me a general estimate of how much you pay monthly/yearly? I know I can go on the sites myself and get the info, but I don't really want a bunch of salespeople calling me just yet;)
TIA!!!
Re: NBR: Cost of home security systems
We pay $36 for ADT with smoke/fire monitoring (smoke monitoring is free monthly, but we had to pay like $200 for the monitor itself). If you don't have a landline (or FIOS) you have to pay $12/month more for their cell service.
IMO, installation was more than I thought it would/should be, because the basic package covers two doors and one keypad. Additional modules (for windows, keypads, or keyrings) were extra and ranged from $100 - $250 depending on the type of module. They definitely try to upsell of course and recommend a window module on every ground floor window (including basement windows I can't imagine anyone fitting through). You can negotiate to get different things thrown in though.
If you're a USAA member go through them with ADT. The monthly price is reasonable and frankly the only reason we have an alarm system at all.
