Late Term and Child Loss

No known cause?

My dr called the other day to tell me that all of my blood work was normal, my placenta was normal except for autolytic changes that occur when a baby dies in utero, and according to the karyotyping, our baby girl was normal. We did not do an autopsy. Anyone else who did not find a cause for their loss? It just makes me think even more that I did something wrong if my baby was otherwise healthy. Also, are there any other questions I should ask at my follow up next week? Should H and I do genetic testing or anything?

  • I think that if your baby was healthy that genetics testing is unnecessary. We also chose not to do an autopsy.

While we don't have a 100% answer, we were told that in our case it is most likely a cord accident. Her cord was about 15 cm short than the average cord. We were told that when the contractions started it pulled the cord too tight and caused it to stop working.

You did nothing wrong! What happened to your little girl is not your fault. It sucks and you can't blame yourself.

  • I haven't gone in for all my testing yet. Going in on 10/28.

This not your fault! Not at all your fault. Things happen and we do our best to protect the babies we carry but we don't have control over this. I am so sorry.

  • It is definitely not your fault. I think this is the hardest thing for us to come to terms with. They didn't find anything wrong with my son either. He was perfect. There was nothing wrong with my placenta. However yesterday when I was at my rheumatologist they suggested I get tested for antiphopholipid syndrome. Apaprently it is an autoimunne disease associated blood clots. It can cause recurrent miscarriages before 10weeks and she didn't tell me this part...but I've been doing some reading it says it can cause stillbirths too. I'm really hoping I test negative because I might be the reason my son went to heaven too early.

  • We did an autopsy even though we know why he died (massive brain bleed). The placenta looked fine and basically my cord failing was a "fluke".

  • We are unsure of the cause of Noah's death as well. the cord was a bit on the skinny side and the placenta was a little small but not abnormally so. My son was long and well developed but a bit on the skinny side. Examination of the placenta showed some bacteria but otherwise it was perfectly healthy. We went with my Dr's recommendation not to do an autopsy as he said in cases like this the autopsy almost never comes back with anything and the insurance would not cover it. I also feel guilty at times like perhaps it was some how my fault. I remember somewhere around 28 or so weeks thinking that my son wasn't very active and being bothered by the idea that there are no u/s after the AS in a healthy pregnancy. I can't shake the memory of feeling like maybe something was wrong but never saying anything. My mom even told me at one point after my loss that she thought it was strange that he wasn't very active, and that most babies at that point would respond to moving the belly and such. I just wish someone had told me that how quiet he was wasn't normal, than maybe something could have been done? It was my first pregnancy and I had nothing to compare it to, but someone else who knew better should have said something.
  • We did an autopsy, and we never really determined a cause for Eliott's loss.  I have MTHFR, but I was told that that did not cause his death.  At the time, I tested negative for another blood clotting disorder that I have since tested positive for, so I don't know about that.  We saw a perinatologist after, and he reviewed everything in the autopsy.  He told me he thinks it was some kind of cord accident.  (((HUGS)))

  • Thank you all for the responses. I don't know if I'll ever believe it was not my fault, but I'm trying. The doctor said the umbilical cord was normal as well, but I'll ask more questions Tuesday.
