ParaGard...

Do you have one? Used to have one? How'd you like it?

Re: ParaGard...

  • The little I know -  paragard can cause heavier AF. I got Mirena instead.

  • I had one, and I really did well with it. I loved not being on hormonal birth control. The only reason I had it removed was to TTC.

I am not prone to cramps or heavy periods. I had no increase in cramps with it, but my periods went from really light and about 2-3 days long to more medium flow and closer to 5 days long.

  • I have it!  The fact that it is hormone free was a big drawing point for me.  I'll be the first to admit that I am already a crazy hormonal bee-yotch at times, I don't need to add to it!  =P

I also love that I can keep it for up to 10 years, versus just 5 with Mirena.  Our plan was to *possibly* try again in 4-5 years, but if we decided to wait longer, I didn't want to have to take one out and put a new one in for just another year or whatever.

My periods before being PG were typically around 4-5 days and not super heavy.  I got my Paraguard at my 6 week PP appointment and I would say my next 5 or 6 periods were 6-7 days, with at least two heavier days in the middle.  But then it slowly seemed to adjust and I'm back to my normal 5 days, medium flow.

    ( / Hello TMI paragraph! / )

    Anyways.  I love it.  HTH!

Had my Mirena removed today. Not a fan of the hormones...they mess with me bad.

I got the Para today, so I'm glad to hear some good experiences!

  • I hope your headaches will be better without it! My cousin/close friend got it a few years ago and really likes it. She did have longer periods at first but said it evened out after that.

  • Ack! I just got the Mirena 2 days ago. How will I know if I'm getting crazy from the hormones? I've already been a space cadet these past 2 days. I picked this over Paragard because my periods were heavy to begin with, I was afraid to make them worse.

  • I just had it put in about 6 weeks ago and so far, so good. I am still BFing so haven't had a period, but I haven't even noticed it since it was put in. I also chose it since it doesn't have hormones and we probably aren't going to have any more kids.

  • I had my Paragard put in 4 months ago.  My heavy periods went from long 6-7 days, to super long 10-14 days and got way heavier.  I honestly go through 2 boxes of tampons and 2 boxes of pads each period now.  Its insane.  BUT I haven't had any cramps or backaches or migraines like I used to.  So I'm still just hoping that the heavy period tapers back off.  OB said to give it up to a year before bailing on it.

Honestly, I'm just happy that it doesn't have hormones, and its long term until DH gets off his @ss and gets the snip.

Honestly, you probably won't have any problems. I've had trouble with BC in the past, so I knew I was rolling the dice. I have friends who love, love theirs! I wouldn't worry too much! :)
