NBR: Do you wear your ring on vacation (outside of the US)?

A friend asked me what I am going to do with my ring when we go to the Bahamas. I never considered not wearing it or not taking it with me. I feel a little naive now. Is this common? Or is she just overly cautious?

Re: NBR: Do you wear your ring on vacation (outside of the US)?

  • I must be also overly cautious.  I don't wear my e-ring on vacations ever.  And I certainly didn't wear it on my honeymoon.  Jay wouldn't let me.  :)

I just worry about losing a stone, not about it getting stolen.

  • The only time I wear my ring anymore is girls' night out at the bar.  So I'd probably leave it home for vacation  :)

  • I've known people to buy fakes for when they travel.  I would always turn my ring so that the diamond was on the inside of my palm if I was in a sketchy place.

  • It depends where I'm going and if the hotel has a safe that I trust, like the kind where you set the passcode yourself. We went to the Caribbean last summer and since I would not wear my rings in the water ever (not just because they could slip off, but because sharks and barracudas likey the shiny things), I had to leave it in the hotel safe for most of the day. I would have been better off leaving it at home.

  • It depends on where I'm going. In Europe I wore it. I left it at home when I went to South America.

  • locked it in the safe in our hotel room when we went to Aruba.  I had plans to leave my engagement ring at home and just wear my band (smaller, less bling)... but I forgot to leave take them off before we left.

this.  it's not so much that I'm worried about losing it but more about I don't want to wear anything flashy when in a 3rd world country where most people don't have enough to eat.  I've also turned the ring around like FF.

  • No, I don't wear my e-ring outside of the US.  I don't want to draw any attention to myself.  We usually go to Mexico or Central America though.  When we went to Europe we stayed in hostels so I didn't want to bring it along.
  • I usually leave my engagement ring at home and just wear my wedding band, no matter where we are traveling.  When we were planning on going to the World Cup, I bought a stainless steel band to wear b/c I didn't want any bling on me whatsoever.

  • I took mine on my honeymoon and just wore it everywhere, never took it off and we didn't leave the resort.

On the last cruise I went on I bought a blingy fake and wore that.

  • I just wear my wedding band and leave the engagement ring at home.  I always seem to be over seas when it's cold too - so it helps not having to deal w/ the e ring snagging on gloves.  I'm overly paranoid though - about getting it stolen, or losing a stone, all of it.
  • I don't take mine out of the country.  I bought a fake one at Forever21 or somewhere like that.
  • We've never traveled anywhere that I felt like wearing it was putting my safety at risk. I travel with it everywhere and rarely take it off for any reason. I figure if something happens to a stone or the ring itself, that's why we have it insured.

To answer your situation, I would (and have) worn my ring in the Bahamas. Maybe, I, too, am naive?

  • If it includes water, I do not. I have a set of fake rings I wear. I do not want to add to the plethora of rings that already inhabit the bottom of the ocean.

My faux rings are also very low key. Not that my usual set is straight up bling but I don't want to look like we're weathly or anything. Nor do I want anyone to feel it would be worth stealing from us. Just my thoughts. I feel like less of a target AND I don't worry about losing it while scuba diving or wondering if it's safe in the hotel safe if I leave it back at the hotel.

PP - "I figure if something happens to a stone or the ring itself, that's why we have it insured." I'm not so worried about my ring being stolen off my finger as much as me getting murdered in the process of the crime being committed!

  • i've worn my on all the vacations we've taken. europe, cruises (including the bahamas), puerto rico. never had any problems. but my ring is also insured so while yes it would suck to lose it, i don't think i'm any more at risk losing it on vacation than at home. i maybe wouldn't wear it to mexico right now, but then again, i probably wouldn't even go to mexico right now.

  • I understand that but go back and read my first sentence. I've never felt like my safety was in danger because I was wearing it. If I thought I was putting my body/family/life at risk, I would not wear it. But then again, I probably wouldn't go wherever that was anyway :) ETA: I was responding to Taytee. I'm on my phone so the "quote" must not have worked.

  • Thanks for all of the valid points ladies! I don't think I'm going to wear it now.
  • I wear it.  Even in the Mediterranean.  DH didn't wear his in the water though because it's not as snug of a fit as mine.
