Barfing at night

The past 4 nights I have awoken about an hour after I fall asleep with a bubble feeling in my throat. It feels like a burp that is stuck, but then when it comes out...it is puke. I am not pleased with this new development and the only solution that seems to somewhat work is eating dinner earlier and sleeping sitting up. It is doing BAD things to my already thrashed back muscles. Who said pregancy was a picnic? I am looking forward to labor already.

Re: Barfing at night

  • Could it be some nasty form of heartburn? I know if I don't take my Zantac twice a day, I come very close to throwing up in my sleep

  • I've had this the last two weeks, I think it's GERD.  I woke up twice choking on it and two nights ago having to vomit but it was just acid.   I tried to not eat after dinner and I didn't have it happen last night.  I read it's better avoid eating too much before bed, my cut off now is 8:00 which is 3 hours before I go to bed.

I think its probably heartburn. I know that I occasionally get really bad heartburn and it will wake me up (many times) in the middle of the night with gaging that eventually leads to barfing. I try to avoid it by taking two tums before bed. I also started sleeping kind of up right, which is uncomfortable but mostly kinda works. I just stacked pillows on top of each other like stairs so its not so hurty on my neck. Its cut down on the amount of heartburn I get, but still sometimes sneaks up on me.

  • I'm betting it's heartburn.  I have been getting the bubble sensation for the last 2 weeks now.  Try eating tums before bed.  If that doesn't work talk with your OB about it to see if he/she can recommend another med for it or home solution.

  • I am already on some pretty heavy reflux meds. I have had excessive heartburn. The pills have gotten rid of the pain but not the problem, is what is sounds like. That would make sense considering I never feel queasy when this happens, I just feel the bubble throat. so gross.

  • Glad I'm not alone on this.  I don't feel like I have heartburn or acid reflux but one night I puked a little, just enought to fill my mouth.  GROSS!!  Then last night it was acid, which burned a lot.  This happens when I'm sound asleep and wakes me up, (not very pleasant), then I'm fine again

  • Me too! It's terrible and not helping with The already difficult task of sleeping.

  • Yup, sounds like acid reflux, fun! I take Zantac twice a day because my heartburn has been so bad, and sometimes I even have to take Tums too. My OB prescribed Losec, but I'm just gonna stick with Zantac since it seems to be the safest. You will definitely feel relief if you cut out certain foods (ie, spicy foods, tomatoes, onions, chocolate, and other triggers) and make sure you don't eat or drink too much late in the evening. I've been eating non stop all day and then by 6/7 I eat a smaller meal and that's it, no room for bedtime snacks for me! Good luck, hope you feel better soon!
