If your DC wakes up at night to use the bathroom...

Do they go back to sleep ok?  DD has been dry overnight for a few months with the occasional accident (no big deal, of course).  The past week or so she's been waking up to pee in the middle of the night - again, no big deal - she yells for me and wants me to come help.  I don't turn the lights on - walk with her to the bathroom, let her pee and take her back to bed.  Problem is that she WON'T go back to sleep.  She has a little potty in her room, but she's not quite awake enough to go on her own, hence why she calls for me.  Yesterday she was up from 3-4am and today she woke up at 2 to pee and was still awake and talking to herself in her room when my alarm went off at 5 (though I hadn't fallen back asleep either since she was still up).  I'm leaving her in her room and gave the monitor to DH so I can just get to work early, but I can't keep this up.  She's always been a CRAPPY sleeper, so I'm pretty used to broken nights of sleep, but I can't deal with waking up at 3 or 4 am when I have to work.  Any suggestions on how to get her back to sleep?  Anyone else have a similar problem?  We've cut her naps out in the past few weeks because her nighttime sleep was so poor, so I know she needs to sleep and don't know how she's still awake!  TIA!

  • Is she crying/unhappy when she's up? Why can't you just walk her back to bed, give her a kiss and then go back to sleep yourself? its up to her if she goes back to sleep.

  • She's intermittently unhappy if that makes sense.  When I walk her back, she screams "I don't want to go back to bed."  I do give her a kiss and walk back out and try to go back to sleep.  After 10-15 minutes, she'll finally calm down and be quiet for a few minutes, then she's back to yelling for me.  I do still use a monitor for her because she has night terrors sometimes and generally doesn't get out of bed on her own.  I would never hear her in my room without the monitor.  We keep doors closed because we have a cat who would keep us all up if we didn't.  I know it's up to her if she sleeps, but it's so frustrating when she's so tired in the mornings that she doesn't wake up easily and takes even longer than normal to get out the door.
  • Yes, now.  I will say it has only been in the past few months that she has done so.  Someone warned me it would be around 4 or 5 when she could get up, go to the bathroom by herself and put herself back to bed.  Guessing it is a phase and hopefully she outgrows it soon!  I would just ignore her or go in and tell her that is not how we act at nighttime, that she is welcome to talk to her stuffed animals or dolls in bed but no more yelling.  FWIW, DD went through a phase of that when going to bed and we finally got her out of it after a few months.

  • Yes, and DD is the worst sleeper ever.  Can you lie down with her for a while?  Isn't it more important that you both get sleep, rather than worry about guessing how much sleep she got?  Just a thought.  It works for us, anyway.

  • my son would do something similar.  he wanted me to put his blankets back on and then would whine about trying to get in the bed with us, which we don't let him do unless he's sick.  I now started a chart with him.  if he gets up to go to the bathroom by himself and then goes back to bed by himself and doesn't wake us up i give him a sticker to put on a calendar in the morning.  If he gets 5 stickers in a row he gets a prize. i expected to buy him something, but he asked twice now for a movie from the library.   i can say since we started this there has been more nights he's not waking me up then there is when he does wake me up.
  • Same here....it takes her 1 hour or more to get back down.  But like you said- crappy sleeper!  My 1st?? Awesome sleeper and she barely awake when she pees and lays right back down.

The worst is when she gets up at 5am to use the potty b/c then she is up for the day!!
