Demanding books

So DS just started getting super interested in books.  He brings books to me all day long, signs "book", and tries to say it.  He says "B" which is really cute.  But, after awhile, it drives me crazy!  He hardly ever wants to play, just read books!  He gets upset if I don't.  I feel bad because I kind of want to hide them for awhile but I do want to encourage his reading.  So, is this a phase or what?  Or is this something he's going to be doing until he's like five and can read them himself?

  • DS does the same thing and has for many months... I am happy that he loves to read but sometimes it's not convenient.  I take the time to sit down, read through the book and as long as I give him 5 or 10 minutes of good reading, he usually ends up wanting to do something else after that time.  It's a good thing that he's so interested in books!

  • Ds1 did that and I have a policy that if you bring me a book, I will read it. Eventually he did stop bringing them over and now prefers looking at them himself. We still read during the day and at bedtime but he doesn't request it.

Yes, it is great that he's so interested.  I am really happy about that.  Yeah, for DS it's not just a 5 or 10 minute thing.  As soon as we start getting to the end of a book, he picks up another one to make sure he has one lined up to hand to me right away :).  The only thing that seems to work is if I get up and do some cleaning or something.  There is no just sitting around on my computer, because as soon as I sit, that's book reading time!

  • take full advantage. if you get tired of reading the same books over and over again- go to the library and check out some kid books-

relax and cuddle and snuggle and read. Its nice.
honestly it the favorite part of my day with both kids.

DD would prefer that i read to her (and her read to me) ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL day long.

DS well. he wants to take a book and throw it down the steps lol. WE are working on it lol. he will snuggle and read with his blankey before naps and bed. lol.

you dont have to READ READ the books- you can just sit and look at pictures and have an open dialogue together.

  • DD reads books constantly, too.   I love it, though.  I would rather sit and read for hours than play with other toys, etc.  Especially since reading aloud has enormous benefits on little ones.

My daughter started by asking me constantly to read to her, but soon she started picking up the books and reciting parts she knew (even reciting parts from a book other than the one she was holding).  So nurture it now - it might lead to amazing quiet time in the future.

  • I think it'll help if I get some new books.  It might make it a little more interesting for me.  Also, he seems to know if I am not really reading it.  If I try to just point to pictures he gets mad, lol.  So apparently, I do actually "have to" read it.  He's very demanding :).

  • I might be showing my age here, but does anyone remember the Disney Read Along books?  They were books that came with a record or cassette tape.  You played the record/tape and followed along in the book.  They always started out: "This is the story of [insert title here]. You can read along with me in your book. You'll know it's time to turn the page when you hear the chimes ring like this: (sound of chimes ringing). Let's begin now."  My sister LOVED those and would play them on her Fischer Price record player all the time.

Maybe you could record a couple of books and ring a bell when it's time to turn the page.  When your son wants you to read to him start the recording (mini recorder or iPod) and show him what to do the first couple of times.  Maybe he'll get the hang of it and let you get some time on the computer while you "read" to him via the recording.

I haven't heard of those but that sounds like a great idea!  I don't really mind reading to him some but it is hard to do ALL day.  So if I could do that some of the time it would be great.  Thanks for the idea.

For quite a while my DD was this way. She didn't like it if the story didn't go exactly the same each time. Now that she's a little older she likes to point out animals or colors and shapes in her books. We read so many books, so many times each day. Before I was a mom I would never have thought I would get tired of reading to my child but sometimes you just want to do something else! My advise is to get more books. I have purchased more of my DD's favorite books and we usually check out about 5-7 books each week at the library. If she tried to bring me or DH the same book over and over we tell her to "go get a different one" and she does.

When you're DS starts talking and you see how much he is learning by you reading to him it will make you feel so great!

  • Have you tried those recordable books? Similar to what PP mentioned but a newer version. My LO is still too young to bring me books, but my mom picked up 2 recordable Elmo books that actually read the story as you turn the page. A little pricey IMO ($19.99 for one) but may be good to give one a try.
  • Yeah, I know, they always ask at the wrong times! haha. It probably is a phase, more of a cause and effect thing. If I take this book to mama, she reads it. His "interest" in the subject matter is still limited. Just make sure you have books that he can engage in by himself. Like the ones that have furry animals to touch, or the books with zippers and buttons and all that. Maybe he will be able to occupy himself with them longer.

Yes, that does help!  We have a few with those little flaps that he can lift up and look at what's underneath.  He does look at those on his own a lot.  I should probably try some more furry animal books, good idea!
