So DS just started getting super interested in books. He brings books to me all day long, signs "book", and tries to say it. He says "B" which is really cute. But, after awhile, it drives me crazy! He hardly ever wants to play, just read books! He gets upset if I don't. I feel bad because I kind of want to hide them for awhile but I do want to encourage his reading. So, is this a phase or what? Or is this something he's going to be doing until he's like five and can read them himself?
Re: Demanding books
Yes, it is great that he's so interested. I am really happy about that. Yeah, for DS it's not just a 5 or 10 minute thing. As soon as we start getting to the end of a book, he picks up another one to make sure he has one lined up to hand to me right away
. The only thing that seems to work is if I get up and do some cleaning or something. There is no just sitting around on my computer, because as soon as I sit, that's book reading time!
take full advantage. if you get tired of reading the same books over and over again- go to the library and check out some kid books-
relax and cuddle and snuggle and read. Its nice.
honestly it the favorite part of my day with both kids.
DD would prefer that i read to her (and her read to me) ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL day long.
DS well. he wants to take a book and throw it down the steps lol. WE are working on it lol. he will snuggle and read with his blankey before naps and bed. lol.
you dont have to READ READ the books- you can just sit and look at pictures and have an open dialogue together.
DD reads books constantly, too. I love it, though. I would rather sit and read for hours than play with other toys, etc. Especially since reading aloud has enormous benefits on little ones.
My daughter started by asking me constantly to read to her, but soon she started picking up the books and reciting parts she knew (even reciting parts from a book other than the one she was holding). So nurture it now - it might lead to amazing quiet time in the future.
I might be showing my age here, but does anyone remember the Disney Read Along books? They were books that came with a record or cassette tape. You played the record/tape and followed along in the book. They always started out: "This is the story of [insert title here]. You can read along with me in your book. You'll know it's time to turn the page when you hear the chimes ring like this: (sound of chimes ringing). Let's begin now." My sister LOVED those and would play them on her Fischer Price record player all the time.
Maybe you could record a couple of books and ring a bell when it's time to turn the page. When your son wants you to read to him start the recording (mini recorder or iPod) and show him what to do the first couple of times. Maybe he'll get the hang of it and let you get some time on the computer while you "read" to him via the recording.
I haven't heard of those but that sounds like a great idea! I don't really mind reading to him some but it is hard to do ALL day. So if I could do that some of the time it would be great. Thanks for the idea.
For quite a while my DD was this way. She didn't like it if the story didn't go exactly the same each time. Now that she's a little older she likes to point out animals or colors and shapes in her books. We read so many books, so many times each day. Before I was a mom I would never have thought I would get tired of reading to my child but sometimes you just want to do something else! My advise is to get more books. I have purchased more of my DD's favorite books and we usually check out about 5-7 books each week at the library. If she tried to bring me or DH the same book over and over we tell her to "go get a different one" and she does.
When you're DS starts talking and you see how much he is learning by you reading to him it will make you feel so great!
Yes, that does help! We have a few with those little flaps that he can lift up and look at what's underneath. He does look at those on his own a lot. I should probably try some more furry animal books, good idea!
