who works out?

Do any of you hit the gym on the regular? Work out at home? Videos? Running?

I am trying to drop 15 by new years and I am wondering what you all do. While having a convo with my Dr. I was advised to get in better shape before TTC #2 because heightened weight can lead to Gest Diabetes.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks in advance for help!

Re: who works out?

  • I do an aerobics video at home since we don't really have extra dough for a gym membership.  There is an LA Fitness on Pac Hwy just south of 272nd that is nice and has childcare.  I think I paid like $40/month when I was going there which included use of the childcare.

TTC #2 for a million years: SA normal, CD 23 bloodwork shows nothing amiss, ovulation detected. Next step: ? maybe CD3 bloodwork to check eggs? All out of pocket, so limited IF tests/treatments.

  • I work out at home. I use my Comcast On Demand and love it. My favorites are anything Jillian Michael's and the 10 Pound Slimdown Extreme.

We belong to LA Fitness also, but I just was not using it, so I cancelled. DH still goes. It's a great gym and has childcare, so that's a bonus.

As far as losing weight, your biggest focus should be cutting calories, and to really make it work, cut out sweets (if you happen to love them like me), entirely. Then, working out and geting cardio will be icing on the cake.

  • I do Hot Yoga. And although I don't track my weight, I can tell that my clothes fit differently.

My girlfriend tracks her weight religiously, and she is on Day 32 of doing Hot Yoga (3x per week) and she has lost 14.5 lbs.

There are tons of Hot Yoga studios, and most offer a great introductory rate (My studio does $20 for 30 days unlimited).

  • I just started a zumba class on Sat mornings. They have them on tues/thurs nights too and love it! I dont know what area you are in but I'm in Lk Stevens if you want the info.

When I was losing weight (Lost 23lbs from Feb-May) I did this as well, I kept my calories around 1200 depending on my work out.  I did a 25-45 minute work out 3-4 times a week. I had a treadmill before we moved but had to store it due to down sizing, and I also like Jillian Michaels Ripped in 30 or 30 day shred. I stand behind the it's 70% "diet" and 30% exercise. Myfitnesspal ROCKS! My husband is using right now.

  • I usually run twice a week and do spin three days a week, but I have been a slacker over the last 3-4 months and it shows. Running almost always happens, but I don't have the stamina that I had before summer started, and I am lucky if I make it to spin one day a week. I need to jump back on the horse.

  • What area are you in???  I *think* I remember reading that you're in the covington area (maybe), if so there is a super cheap, no frills, get the job done, gym up here that is less than $10 bucks a month, and they have a daycare that is like $2 per visit.  Thats where we go (er where I used to go before I got KU and then had these babies) but I will start going again as soon as I am healed and find the time.  I can give you the info if you are in my area.  If not, and I am thinking someone else, then there are tons of good work out videos on demand if you have comcast.

  • My normal work out routine is running 4x a week, two days of lifting, and one day of cross training ( I usually take a class called Gravity at my gym). Lifting I do at the gym or at home depending on the weather and the time of year. I've slowly built up a mini home gym to get me by.

If you aren't a normal runner and want to get started look up couch to 5k on the interweb. That will help you build up to a good base.

This is a great way to start.  I run but before I got KU I couldn't lose weight running unless I was training for  something and had a few work outs a week that pushed my lactic acid threshold.  Otherwise I run to "stay in shape".  I do  yoga (hot or regular), running, and Barre workouts now.  I do Barre 2 or 3 days a week and I'm in love (flavor of the month i'm sure but for me now I've never been stronger).

If you are new to working out your body will get a great benefit from just getting used to being active and using muscles it's never used before.  Good luck and good for you for making great changes!

  • I've been a slacker recently but I would work out at home. Walk 30-45 minutes a night, do a video (yoga, pilates, Jillian Michaels), or biggest loser for wii. I also tracked what I ate on myfitnesspal.com  It was a great website and really helped me to keep track of the extras I would eat. I hope to start working out again, when my energy comes back!

This! I have an elliptical in the garage I use to work out. And I try to walk at lunch as much as I can.

  • I am just starting to work out again at the 24 Hour Fitness in Kent.  It's about $40 a month which is a little expensive but DH and I have agreed that when it comes to our health and getting back in shape we aren't going to let money be a factor of not doing something (to a certain extent!).  Plus its less then 5 minutes from our house and I drive by it on my way home so I have less of a reason to make an excuse not to go.

  • I miss having a workout routine. I cannot figure out how to fit it in since DD was born. A gym/yoga classes/etc is not in our budget. I did do Couch to 5K right before I got pregnant last fall and it was great, and completely free, other than running shoes if you need those. I need to start doing a DVD or something in the morning, I guess, but I'm too sleep deprived right now to get up even earlier on work days than I already am (5:45am).

Leanne, this is reminding me I want to Zumba with you! (is it a verb? If not, I just made it one Big Smile)

  • I can't lose weight unless I'm tracking my food intake (another plug for myfitnesspal.com).  I tend to overestimate my exercise, and underestimate my food intake if I'm not writing it down.

For exercise, I try to run. It's easy, low investment and can be as long or as short as you like. The Couch to 5K plan is great for getting started. I started with that a few years ago and gradually worked my way up to a 1/2 marathon. I quit running for the few months we were going through IVF, but now I need to get back to it and lose this 15 lbs of fertility med/stress eating weight.

I used to do a weekend run around Greenlake with some friends, which was great. We always went at the pace of the slowest runner, and then went out for brunch. If you can find a group of people to work out with, it makes it much easier to motivate!

  • Before baby I was into running and free weights.  Now I'm a huge CrossFit fan - I can fit at least one class a week into my crammed schedule, and two to three other workouts in on my own where I just follow CrossFit plans off the website.

I have always loved high-intensity intervals, so it was an easy transition for me.  If you have a gym near you, check it out.  Very motivating group setting and challenging workouts.

ETA: in the past, Weight Watchers worked amazing for me.  Currently it doesn't fit my lifestyle, so I usually cut out dairy and grains and stock up on veggies, fruits and lean meats.  Cutting out dairy and all the sugary stuff I used to live on made a huge difference for me, but it is challenging :(
