Well, I've just experienced the biggest, fattest fail of the week - tried to go to the Frederick Totswap - let's just say that we made it ten minutes into a 35mn drive and turned around. HYSTERICAL screaming from the time we left home until we got home - I stopped ten minutes in to check diaper, feed, soothe... Penelope was all smiles once i took her out of the car seat. Once I put her back in the carseat, though...back to nonstop hysterical screaming so i turned around to go home. The hysterical creaming didn't stop until, of course, we pulled into my neighborhood, at which point she was so exhausted from screaming that she fell asleep. Definitely the worst meltdown that she's had - hiccuping, choking on her own spit, turning purple. It was great - made me feel like a fabulous mom and I still don't know why the sudden meltdown. <sigh>
I hope you ladies are having a more successful friday than I am.
Re: Big Fat Fail
ugh, this was our experience with #2 (#1 loved car rides), until i discovered white noise in the car! turn the radio to some random in between station and turn it up. waaaay up. our car has speaker options, so i could adjust it so that the sound only came out of the speakers in DD's quadrant of the car. i'd leave it up that loud for a few minutes...usually, that was all it took to get her to settle down.
HTH!
both my kids hate(d) the car seat. The 8min ride to my Mom's would sometimes take twice that much b/c I'd pull over so often. Even now, at 16mo, DS is not a fan. DD is 3 and a little better. Some babies just hate car seats.
good for you for attempting it, though; it'll get better
This. Radio static cranked to a level you swear will cause permanent hearing damage saved us on many a long car ride when DD was an infant. It would settle her, and then once she fell asleep we could turn it down to a manageable level.
Also, have you had any luck with wearing her? DD *hated* being in her car seat and would scream during drives (or being pushed in her travel system or a shopping cart), but once we got where we were going and took her out, she calm down. Maybe next time push through and finish the drive, and she'll be OK once you get to your destination? Sounds mean, but if she gets so exhausted by the screaming, she might just sleep once you get her out of the seat and you can do your shopping in peace.
Thanks, Ladies - yep, i've tried the radio static but i haven't cranked it up. I'll try that again next time (most of the time it hasn't worked). She's been 'OK' with the carseat most times (some crying, then settles down) since we got her a little mobile that clips to it. This time, however, i have NO idea what happened. She started the usual crying and then it escalated into DefCon 1 with no obvious stimulus.
JKM, she loves being in a sling and i always have one with me to carry her around whenever i get to where i'm going but i was kind of stuck in the car. I hope she doesn't repeat this fiasco since I HAVE to drive with her an hour each way this coming tuesday.
All I can say was a beer was in order after putting her down to sleep tonight ;-) Oh, by the way, I moved up her bedtime - it's worked like a charm!
I totally sympathize. My kids *hated* riding in the car when they were young. There was one time I had to call DW and make her meet me in a parking lot with our other car so she could finish the drive home-- the kids' crying was just more than I could take, and I was a sobbing mess.
If it helps, we started "practicing" driving in the car in little spurts, and eventually they got used to it.
GL!
