LO is 4 months on Thursday, but 4 lbs away from growing out of his infant carseat. I know it'll be a while yet since growth slows down, but I want to start my research now. Will be needing the next "step up" but I don't know where to start. Looking at options that would convert to the booster so it can grow all the way through his carseat needs. Also, will likely need to buy three, since mom, DH and I all need our own and don't really want to switch multiple times a day. Any recs are appreciated. TIA!
Re: Carseat recs come in!
you're not going to be able to buy a seat that converts to a booster as your next seat. The only one I would even consider is the new graco smart seat, but I don't think it's the best you can do with your money. It's a pretty short shell, so it's not going to last most kids a long time. A lot of people look at the alpha omega...don't. It's a PITA to install, and it makes a horrid booster seat.
Your LO needs to stay rear facing until at least a year, but the longer he remains rear facing, the better. The AAP recommends at least 2 years. The best seats that convert to a booster are forward facing only, which is why I'm pointing this out.
I would look at the sunshine kids radian (now made by diono...so either brand), graco my ride and first years true fit. All three of those seats have decent shell height and weight limits.
Ah, good info. See, I didn't know about the booster thing, thanks.
So...forgive my ignorance...is the next step a rear-facing chair? I knew he had to be rear-facing as long as he can, and he's not very tall, so legs won't be a problem, I don't think, but the next step looks like a "chair," but faces backward for a while, then turns around, right?
Awesome, I'm going to check out those three tonight. Thanks, Mrs!
yep, a convertible car seat is the next step. It'll be rear facing at first, and then you can turn it forward facing.
and you're very welcome
What we did - I got a Britax for my car that grew with DD until she turned 5 when I switched to the booster seat because - let's be real - what school age kid wants to sit in a 5-point KWIM... The nice thing is that it was convertible for both rear and forward facing even if it was pretty big.
Then for DH's car, I let him pick his own out which was a pretty cheap one that also went from rear to forward facing. It got the job done because she wasn't in his car that often enough to justify another Britax. Then eventually we got the booster seat for his car when she grew out of that one (around age 4)..
I agree with the PP, go with something that is rated to a higher weight rating! DD sounds like your LO in that she outgrew the infant carrier at about the same point when she was little. This time around I'm getting one of the heavier rated bucket seats because of the convenience. Though, I will say it was hard passing up the $129 Graco travel system that was on sale at Menard's I saw last week!! But there's no way given how big DD was that I'd get another 22lb. rated bucket seat when there are 30-35lb. ones out there now.
