April 2012 Moms

Should I register for this?

Sorry if this has been asked before and I missed it.

I plan on breastfeeding LO but I know that sometimes, this just isn't possible due to low supply and other mediating factors. Do you think I should register for a pump and breastfeeding supplies now or wait until baby is here to see how it works out to buy everything? I hate to have a bunch of stuff I will never use but my intentions are that I will need them. I'm torn.

Re: Should I register for this?

  • You can return a pump that has not been opened.  So why not have it on hand just in case you need it?  I needed mine the day after we can home from the hospital...boy was I glad I had one!

Also, register for EVERYTHING because you can use your completion coupon for everything you registered for but didn't get.  Even the expensive stuff....put it on there!!

  • I would register now and then return if you don't need it.
  • My hosptial doesn't rent pumps anymore.  But if they did, I'd pick that option.

My opinion on this is, if you are really going to try to BF...if your heart is really set on your child ingesting BM...you're going to use the pump.  It's only a super small percentage of women who actually CANNOT BF for physical reasons.  So it's a good thing to spend your money on.  Even if "your money" is a place on the registry or gift cards.

*This may sound judgemental of people who don't BF, but I want to add a disclaimer that I'm not even sure if I'm going to BF this time because it was such an emotional and physical struggle last time.  BUT, I also may EP, so...I'm going to use my pump again!

Ah, I didn't even think about the completion coupon. Good call on that!

Thanks to all of you for the advice! :)

    I agree 100%

  • I would feel really weird myself registering for something so personal. My SIL told us the one she was hoping for and we all went in and got it for her, she did not register for it.

  • I put it on my registry, not really expecting anyone to buy it since it was so expensive.  My mom ended up finding it on sale at a different store and had a coupon, and was able to get Buy, Buy, Baby (where I was registered) to price match it!

And like PP, I don't want to sound like I'm judging moms who don't BF, for whatever reason.  But the majority of women CAN breastfeed.  It is a very small percentage of women who have medical issues who cannot BF.  Shoot, some women are even able to re-lactate after their milk mostly drying up!  If you are committed to BFing and are willing to work hard for it, then you most likely will be able to do it.

I would get the pump and just not open it until you need it.  That way you can return it if you don't use it.

  • I'm getting my SIL's pump and I'll pump all the time as well as BF.  Whatever I don't use I'll donate.  We got a deep freezer just for this.  We bought it used from a couple that got it for the same reason.  She later donated 25 gallons of BM.  She was a pumping machine.

  • I have been asking myself this SAME question.  Today I got the Baby Bargains book so many of you have recommended and in the pump section, they do compare renting and owning.  Renting is a great option....but I did notice that it wasn't a cheap as I thought.  Renting a pump can cost between 45-60 dollars a month, plus you have to spend 40-60 dollars on new tubing and collection containers....I was thinking that is already at least 100 dollars for one month!  Even though I'm a first time mom and unsure of how easy BF will be for me, I really believe in it and will try everything (once again, no judgement for moms who don't, one of my best friends didn't and she is a fantastic mom).  So....I am going ahead and putting it on my registry.  If I don't get the pump as a gift, I'll buy it with my completion coupon!
