Baby Names

Are these names too weird??

It's always been important to me to give my children names that have a story or history (always a little bitter that my name was just randomly picked cause no one could agree on anything!).  And I'm also all about giving them unique names, but at the same time I don't want them to be so strange people are like "what the heck were they thinking!?!"

So here is our number one choice for a boy:

Croix Roman (My husband's name is Jerome, so Roman is a tribute to him and we actually got Croix from St. Croix fishing rods, fishing is a huge part of our life)

And here's our choice for a girl:

Juniper Joann (My mom's name is Mary Ann and my MIL's name is Mary Jo, so that's where we got Joann.  Juniper has two reasons being the month the baby is due (June) and a tribute to my husband's forestry career)

So what do you guys think...too weird??

***Just to clarify Croix is pronounced Croy (like Troy)....but it seems like it's not a favorite!

Re: Are these names too weird??

  • I'm sorry, but neither of them are good for me. Too out there.

  • Absolute NO to Croix. Ew and Yuck... Ick!

I LOVE Juniper though! Joann is just okay with it for me - I do like the sentiment.

  • The MN's are okay. Juniper is NMS, but still not so out there for me to call it weird.

However, I would find it odd to name a child after a fishing rod brand, regardless of how much I fished. But that's just me.

  • I appreciate the reasoning behind the first names, but I just can't get on board. I don't know how to pronounce Croix and when my child grew up asking where we got his name from, I can't imagine telling him the inspiration was from a fishing rod... Juniper isn't as bad to me as I've seen plenty of kids (mainly girls) with names that are or inspired from different plants/flowers, but again it's NMS. I do like both of the middle names though.

  • I LOVE Juniper and I think it is a great personal choice for you. Middle name is fine.

I don't love your boy name- I would prefer Roman Croix.

  • Croix is too out there for me. Is there a name of a place you like to go fishing instead that might make a good name? I honestly don't think I'd like to be named after a fishing rod...

Juniper...I LOVE. It's a total guilty pleasure name for me. I'd never have the guts to use it, but I love, love, love it! :)

  • Croix is pretty bad. As is the idea of naming your child after fishing rods. (I realize it's a huge part of your life, but isn't there some other aspect of fishing you could choose?)

Juniper is NMS, but it's not terrible. I love June though.

  • Are these names too weird? Yes.

I can appreciate that you want some meaning behind names, I really do, but I think I'd search for a place or river name or something to tie it together. I don't mind the middle names though.

  • I think Croix is too weird and out there.

I love Juniper Joann!  So cute.

  • We love to fly fish too, so I think Croix is pretty cool. I instantly knew how to pronounce it. There are other brands too if you feel like nobody will every pronounce the name right. Sage instantly came to my mind, but I also don't if are especially attached to St. Croix rods. :)  And, I also like Juniper for your reasons.

We named our kid the same way. While her name is "normal" it certainly didn't come from the fact that we only liked the name. Props to you for having such special meaning.

  • Not a fan of either. What if you swapped the first and MNs?

  • I really don't like either.. Especially Croix   just looks awkward and even though I knew how to pronounce it I think it will definitely trip people up.  Juniper is just not pretty to me at all for a girl..   I like how you came up with Joann as a MN though!
  • I like Juniper Joann, and Roman is good too.  I don't hate Croix, but I don't love it either.  If you want a fishing related name what about: Finn, River, Laken, or the name of a favorite fishing spot?  I do appreciate that you have put a lot of thought into names that have meaning for you. GL!

  • I actually liked the name criox more before I read where you got it from.

You may be upset that your name was randomly chosen, but I think I would be a little upset that I was named after a fishing rod. What if he hates to fish

However I think that is ok to do something like that for a middle name. I would switch them to Roman Croix.

  • Sorry, I'm not a fan.  I don't like how Croix is pronounced in French as a name (not pronounced Croy), but at least Anglacized Croix sounds better.  Still wouldn't use it.

Juniper isn't as bad, but I don't like the combo with Joann.  For some reason I read it as "Jumpin' Joann."

  • I like them both.

But I think its a bit strange to name your child after a fishing rod... You didnt like that your name had no meaning. Will your son like the fact that hes named after a fishing rod? Not that great of a story if you ask me.

  • Definitely NO to Croix. Juniper is ok. Your reasoning for the choices is pretty cheesy-I would be embarassed to tell a anyone I named my kid after a fishing rod or my husband's profession....it's just kind of weird.

  • I like the sound of Roman Croix better but I love the name. I would have to yell Juniper out of the back door a few times to make sure I really liked the name and not just the idea of it.
  • I agree that a lot of people would have difficulty pronouncing Croix.

Both names are a little "hippy dippy" to me (I mean that in the nicest way possible) but if that's your style, go for it, at least they're spelled correctly!

I also love unusual names, and want to get behind Croix, but I just can't do it. If I knew a guy I liked with that name, it would probably grow on me, though.

  • I think Croix is awful. It doesnt sound or look nice, people will always think you're/he's saying 'Troy', and it will forever be mis-spelled.?

I don't mind Juniper though. Dont love it, but its fine, and I think June is a pretty name (nickname in this case).?

  • Not a huge fan of Croix...mainly because I wasn't sure how to pronounce it at first (although I should have because I know someone with the last name St. Croix...I just didn't make the connection). I don't mind the way it sounds. Although I'm not a fan of the name Roman, I think Roman Croix works better.

Juniper is okay. I like your reasoning behind Joann. I'm not a fan of alliterative names but that's just me.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the way you've come up with your name choices. It sounds to me that you're not necessarily wanting to name a future son after a fishing rod...but that you just happen to be into fishing...and St. Croix is a brand of fishing rod...and you like the name. Same for Juniper, I suppose.

Croix, not my style plus I didn't know how to pronounce it.

  • umm yes. too weird - Do you really have to ask about Croix? As if naming your kid specifically after a line of fishing poles isn't obviously weird - paired with "Roman" for a middle name gives me a strange image of a sea-creature spearing, Catholic evangelist. and then- Juniper Joann?  the image that comes to mind is Jenny running through the cornfields with little Forest Gump, trying to get away from her abusive father. "Dear God, make me a bird, so I can fly far - far far away... from my own name, because it's horrible." The two names together scream hillbilly. Roman is a great name, and Anne is a great name. :)
