Cloth Diapering

CD's causing diaper rash?

We are using pocket style CD's with microfiber inserts. Lately I've been finding that the more often he wears them the more he gets diaper rash. We go back to disposables for a day and the diaper rash goes away. Since the rash goes away we go back to CD's and the rash comes back.

I've tried stripping them and it doesn't make a difference. Even the brand new ones that I got (and prewashed of course) are not making a difference.

The only thing that I can think of is it is because the CD's are so thick (we use 2 microfiber inserts) and warm that they are making him sweat and that could be causing the rash.

Anyone else have this issue? What can I do to help it?

Also, why is it that you can't use diaper rash cream with CD's?

Re: CD's causing diaper rash?

  • What brand pockets are you using? Some babies are sensitive the the BumGenius because of the suedecloth they use.  Could it be the detergent your using?  Maybe try switching or adding an extra hot rinse to make sure there's no buildup.

As for the creams, they form a barrier on the top of the diapers causing them to repel and leak.  If you want to use a non CD safe one, just be sure to use a liner.

  • Could be a few things:

    1. He could be having a reaction to the inner on the pocket. What brand are they?

    2. MF may not be your best bet. You could try switching to hemp and see if it helps.

    3. To follow off on #2, MF may just not be absorbing enough to keep him dry enough. You could also try a fleece liner as a stay-dry option, along with switching to hemp, or pairing 1 MF insert with a hemp insert (my preferred combination).

You can use diaper rash cream with CDs, you just have to be careful which ones you use. Google cloth diaper safe diaper creams and you'll get a list. A lot of the traditional ones have zinc or oils that will build up and cause repelling. You can use safer creams along with a fleece liner to keep stuff from building up on the diaper. I like Aveeno.

  • We are using the Alva Baby brand ones. I'm pretty sure they are fleece on the inside.

Aveeno is zinc free? I didn't know that, I'll have to get some. Thanks.

ETA: We are using dye and fragrance free detergent. It is the President's Choice brand.

Aveeno is not zinc free, as far as I know. But it's considered the safest of the unsafe creams, if that makes any sense.

  • What is your wash routine? You could have ammonia or detergent buildup.

Also, my DD can't do pockets for too long.  We use them for outings and grandma's house, but otherwise she is in fitteds without a cover or with a wool cover for breathability.  She gets a bit "swampy" as my DH calls it (sorry TMI!) if we keep her in pockets too long.
