Trouble TTC

laproscopy experiences? endo? fibroid removal?

Ladies -

Talked with my NP today and asked about doing a laproscopy to check for/remove any endometriosis as well as possibly removing a sizable fibroid that is on the outside of my ute (but "won't interfere with a pregnancy"). I have a consult set up for Monday to talk with a doc about it.

Regarding the endo - don't think I have a ton of obvious symptoms, but I know that you can also not have any symptoms and still have it. My periods have always been somewhat painful with lots of heavy cramps for at least a day or sometimes as many as 3-4 days. I also have a lot of lower back pain and when I was in high school and college I would often throw up during my period.  Endo can effect implantation and cause recurrent miscarriages, so that's my concern. Nothing unusual shows up on my ultrasounds or in my HSG though.

Regarding the fibroid - my NP doesn't seem that concerned and I'm not all that concerned, but it is a decent size (not huge, but not tiny either) and if I was having a laproscopy anyways, maybe they would remove it.

What was your experience like? How was the recovery? When could you try to conceive again?

TIA.

Re: laproscopy experiences? endo? fibroid removal?

  • I had my lap last December and I had stage II (moderate) endo removed as well as polyps and a rather large fibroid.

The actual surgery went really well and so did recovery. I had the surgery on a Thursday and was back to work the following Tuesday (and I probably could've gone in on Monday - I worked from home that day).

My RE scheduled a follow up appointment 2 weeks after my surgery and said we could start cycling again the next month. GL!

Thanks so much. Were you nervous about it? It's a surgery where they put you under, correct? Did you have any pain afterwards or did you have pain meds?

    Thanks again.

  • I had my lap on July 21st. I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Endometriosis and had two polyps removed from my uterus. My recovery wasn't too bad. I say the worst part is the gas pain. But after a week I felt better.  We aren't going to be able to conceive until January because I am on Lupron to get rid of the rest of the endo.

If you think you do have endo then please have a lap ASAP no matter what your doctor may say. If I waited on my lap then my appendix (which they removed) would have erupted and I could have lost my whole reproductive system.  I know I am an extreme case but endo can grow fast so it's best to not wait! Good luck!!

  • I had a lap last Friday.  I was sore for a good 3-4 days.  I am still sore where I have stiches but it is not too bad.

I had some endo removed as well as adhesions to my right tube.

I go next week to find out when we can TTC again.

  • The symptoms you are describing are about the same that I have.  I actually just had my lap. yesterday, and I feel fine.  The surgery isn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, and my doctor said we can try as soon as we want, especially since our chances are greater now.

I have stage II endo, and I had it all over both ovaries and one was even attached to my back wall cavity. (thought it was uterus but MH told me wrong).  They were able to fix everything, so there is good news.

I would ask for a lap. if you have super painful periods or get sick with your period, especially if you a have fibroid. I would not want to wait, the longer you wait with endo, the worse it can get (if you do indeed have it)  Good luck!

  • I had my lap last sept.  I had what my doc thought was a tubal cyst (a large one), but turns out it was an ovarian tumor, and he found I had stage 3 endo and my left ovary was completely adhered to my pelvic wall.  All the endo was lasered, adhesions were removed, and tumor removed.

Surgery was fine, I was put all the way under.  Felt fine after, just groggy, tired, and bloated (they have to fill your abdomen with a starchy liquid when they laser away endo so it can heal without sticking to anything).  I was 95% at a week after.  I had my surgery on a Thursday and by Monday I was okay, just a little sore and had to move slowly.  By Tuesday I was with my son alone all day and was fine.  I had 3 incisions though, and most only have 2.

I had NO symptoms of endo.  I had heavy periods with cramping, but nothing I thought was out of the ordinary.  My cycles are long and irregular, but that's not an endo symptom.

I had no gas pain, and we were told we could still try that same cycle (had surgery on CD4) but no sex or anything in the vagina for 2 weeks.  So I O late, so we were still able to try.

I was more nervous about what they'd find rather than the actual surgical process! Yes, you're knocked out for the whole procedure (thankfully!). They gave me Vicodin and 800mg. Ibuprofen. I was actually fine just taking one of the Ibuprofen's here and there and I don't think I needed any pain meds after the 2nd day. It just felt like period cramps.

  • Wow! Thanks everyone for all the responses. I will talk with the doc on Monday and see if it's something they think is worth doing. I'm hoping I could have it done this cycle, since it's canceled anyways and see if it helps anything later on.

Thanks so much. You girls always manage to both put me at ease and inform me, which isn't easy to do.

  • I had the same side effects as the others: bloating, gas pain, soreness. The kicker for me Was my dr didn't expect to find much and would be in and out in ~30-40 minutes. 2 hours later he came to tell DH that they removed an ovary and tube because of endo. We are now on a 6 month TTC hiatus until April because I am on Lupron to take care of the remaining endo. So if you and your dr really think his might be an issue don't delay too long.

  • I had lap in April. I don't remember anything from surgery. Yes you are totally out but no effects from that (no soreness from tubes or anything). But, I woke up crying from the pain. I did not have any of the gas pain that most people experience. I just had a lot of cramps/pain. However, I had severe cramps/pain before surgery (like daily) hence the surgery. So, maybe some of my pain was that. It took me a month for cramps to go away. It took about 2 weeks to be able to feel okay at work. I had lots of endo, polyps, adhesions, colon was wrapped around ovaries and cervix and something else was fused together. I went on lupron immediately after so waiting for AF to begin ttc. I would have the lap done. Endo can grow very very fast. If I had waited a few more months I could have ended up with both tubes blocked.
  • I had my lap on a Friday and was back at work on Tuesday.  My RE removed endo from all over the place and endometriomas from my ovaries--the whole surgery took about 2 hours.

I was sore from the gas for about a day or two (shoulder pain) and then just really bloated and crampy for almost 2 weeks.  My stitches never bothered me a bit.

    Good luck!

  • I had my lap in August on a Thursday and I was back at work on Tuesday. I really didn't start moving around until Sunday. I just felt so week and it took more out of me than I thought it would.

Luckily, I didn't have the gas pain but my abdomen was really sore so I needed help getting up and walking Fri and Sat and Sun I was starting to move on my own.  Take it super easy and if you have a recliner sleep in it! I was parked there from Thurs to Sun!

I was super bloated for so long! I hope you have some comfy pants!

They found Stage III Endo. I had it on my uterus, abdomen wall, fallopian tubes and I had one adhesion on a fallopian tube. They cleared it all up.

  • I had a lap and hysteroscopy on Tuesday.  Luckily they found no scarring, no classic endo, only 2 small spots they took to biopsy.  Because everything looked good he did ovarian drilling on both sides. I had a hard time getting up and down the first 2 days but that is getting better.  I went back to work Thursday which I think was too soon.  I am still kind of uncomfortable, mostly bloating and gassy and tenderness at the incision sites.  But I also think I am feeling worse cause DH is away in Las Vegas on a trip he won from work and I am home alone recovering. Sad

I hope that the ovarian drilling works.  Supposedly I might ovulate on my own or at least be more responsive to the meds.  We are now debating whether to do one more Clomid cycle or if we should jump to injectables.
